Its message is the meaning of “¡Sí se puede!”—but the list is one outlet’s selection, not a ranking or a definitive account of Latina achievement. Their careers span music, dance, acting, television, film production, and business, while their distinct backgrounds resist any single definition of Latinidad.
What this selection says about Latinidad
The six profiles tell a story of visibility across different stages and industries. Some of the women became known through Latin music before reaching wider audiences; others crossed into U.S. film or television, or built careers that also include producing and business. Their paths do not represent every Latina experience, and the feature does not offer a statistic measuring representation. Grammy wins and nominations are career records, not measures of cultural representation.
Nor is Latinidad a single background. The feature and biographical sources identify Puerto Rican, Colombian, Mexican, and Cuban American roots, alongside individual relationships to language, family, and career. The common thread is not sameness, but women making their identities and work visible in fields where their stories could reach audiences far beyond their places of origin.
Six careers, six distinct paths
Jennifer Lopez: a Puerto Rican Bronx identity on a global stage
People en Español highlights Lopez as a singer, actor, and dancer, pointing to her chart hits, films, and Super Bowl halftime performance. A Recording Academy feature published October 7, 2022, describes her as a Puerto Rican woman from the Bronx and discusses how her career helped elevate Latin music and culture. It attributes this statement to Lopez, speaking to Billboard in 2020: “Everybody knows that I’m the Puerto Rican girl from the Bronx. I’m proud of that because there’s no reason for that to ever hide. It’s the secret to my success.”

#1 Best Overall
Shakira: Colombian roots and a crossover into English-language pop
Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, Shakira built a career in Latin music before widening her reach internationally. Her 2001 album Laundry Service marked her English-language crossover. The Recording Academy reports four Grammy wins and seven nominations through the 2026 Grammy Awards; these are Grammy figures, not Latin Grammy totals.
Christina Aguilera: Spanish-language music alongside an English-language career
Aguilera’s connection to her Latin roots includes Mi Reflejo (2000), a Spanish-language album, and the 2022 album Aguilera. The Recording Academy reports five Grammy wins and 21 nominations through the 2026 Grammy Awards. Those totals describe her Grammy record, not the extent of Latina representation in music.
Sofía Vergara: from Colombian television to U.S. sitcom fame
Vergara was born in Barranquilla, Colombia. The Television Academy biography describes her move from Hispanic-market television into broader U.S. television, while People en Español emphasizes her role as Gloria on Modern Family and the Colombian accent she brought to the character. Her trajectory highlights a path into American sitcoms distinct from the music careers elsewhere on this list.
Salma Hayek: acting, producing, and directing
People en Español traces Hayek’s career from Mexican telenovelas to Hollywood and describes her work as an actor, producer, and director. The 2022 feature also notes her Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Frida, as well as the 2021 Kering Women in Motion award. These are the feature’s reported award details rather than an independently checked current awards record.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Estefan began as the lead singer of Miami Sound Machine and became known as a singer and businesswoman. The Recording Academy reports five Grammy wins and 14 nominations through the 2026 Grammy Awards. Her advice in the Academy profile is direct: “Whatever it is your heart desires, please go for it. It’s yours to have.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the careers are not a single template
Lopez’s work across music, acting, and dance; Shakira’s transition from Latin music to English-language pop; Aguilera’s Spanish-language recording alongside a broader pop career; and Vergara’s television crossover show several different ways an entertainer can reach new audiences. Hayek’s acting and production work and Estefan’s music and business add other dimensions. None of these paths is more representative than the others, and the six profiles should not be read as a checklist for what a Latina career must look like.
