The real Metro told The Washington Post that he had never met Tim Walz, contradicting the clip’s central claim. The video’s production method remains disputed, and the cited reporting does not identify who made it.
What happened in the video?
On October 16, 2024, a video appeared on X under an account purporting to belong to Matt Metro. The man in the clip claimed to be Matthew Metro, a former student of Mankato West High School, where Tim Walz taught. He made an allegation about Walz. The claim was unsupported, and the real Metro said the alleged encounter did not happen.
According to The Washington Post, posts featuring the clip had received at least 5 million views, based on engagement data published by the platform at the time of its October 21, 2024 report. That is a historical figure, not a current view count.
What did the real Matthew Metro say?
The Washington Post interviewed Metro in Hilo, Hawaii. He said he was not the man shown in the video and that he had never met Walz. The Post quoted him saying: “It’s obviously not me: The teeth are different, the hair is different, the eyes are different, the nose is different,” and, of the use of his identity, “It’s an invasion of my privacy and my personal life.”

Metro is a real former student of Mankato West. AFP reported that Mankato Area Public Schools confirmed he attended the school in 1997, and quoted his brother confirming that the man in the video was not him. AFP also noted differences in the speaker’s facial features and voice.
Was the video AI-generated?
The reporting does not settle how the clip was made. CBS News quoted UC Berkeley professor Hany Farid assessing it as a “cheap fake.” Other fact-check coverage, including Lead Stories, characterized it as AI-generated. Those are differing assessments, not a conclusive identification of the production method.
