The 2018 series resolves the immediate story of Hester Appleyard, but leaves the disappearances open. Showrunner Larysa Kondracki offered one possible explanation—that the events happened in Hester’s head—but described it as her own theory, not a definitive answer.
What the finale establishes about Hester
Prime Video’s episode-six synopsis says Hester believes her vengeful husband is behind the disappearances and is coming after her. When Sara’s guardian arrives, the synopsis calls this “conclusive proof of Mrs Appleyard’s lies.” Hester then goes to Hanging Rock, where the episode reveals what led to her demise.

That resolves the immediate arc around Hester and her deceptions. The synopsis does not disclose the girls’ fate or explain how they disappeared.
What happened to the missing girls?
The series does not provide a definitive answer. In a May 29, 2018 interview with TheWrap, showrunner and director Larysa Kondracki said viewers still do not know what happened to the girls by the end. She described the conclusion as open and said she wanted audiences to debate it.

That ambiguity is the answer, rather than a hidden solution the finale expects viewers to uncover. The official episode synopsis explains the Hester storyline, while Kondracki’s comments confirm that the girls’ disappearance remains unresolved.
Was it all in Hester’s head?
That is Kondracki’s personal theory, not a confirmed plot explanation. In the interview, she speculated that none of the girls existed and that everything happened in Appleyard’s head. The series does not establish this as fact, so it is best understood as one possible interpretation of its open ending.

Kondracki summed up the range of responses by saying, “Every single person involved in the show has a different feeling.” She added that she wanted viewers to debate what happened.

Prime Video identifies the series as an adaptation of Joan Lindsay’s novel Picnic at Hanging Rock. The available official synopsis and creator interview do not establish a scene-by-scene comparison between the show and the book’s endings, so they cannot support a definitive account of how the two versions differ. Readers interested in the source story can look to Lindsay’s novel.
