The Wild Robot is a 2024 DreamWorks animated film about a stranded service robot who learns to live among wild animals and becomes an adoptive parent. It is available on Netflix according to Netflix’s May 30, 2025 viewing guide, while Prime Video’s listing offers UHD rental and purchase; availability depends on your location and may change. Critic Mark Kennedy of the Associated Press praised its visual detail and emotional storytelling, making it a strong choice for viewers who want family animation with more on its mind than comic adventure.
What is The Wild Robot about?
Written and directed by Chris Sanders, the film adapts Peter Brown’s illustrated middle-grade novel. Roz, a service robot, is stranded on an uninhabited island. She gradually adapts to its wildlife and becomes the adoptive parent of Brightbill, an orphaned gosling.
The story’s central tension comes from the encounter between a machine built to serve and a natural world that does not follow instructions. As Roz forms relationships with the animals, the film explores caregiving, connection, and what it means to be alive. The voice cast includes Lupita Nyong’o as Roz, Pedro Pascal as Fink, Kit Connor as Brightbill, Catherine O’Hara as Pinktail, Bill Nighy as Longneck, and Stephanie Hsu as Vontra, alongside Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames. DreamWorks’ film page lists the cast and credits.
Is The Wild Robot worth watching?
The strongest case for the film is the combination of a tender parent-and-child story with richly observed animation. In an Associated Press streaming guide published in January 2025, film critic Mark Kennedy called it “an absolute movie triumph, a soulful sweet-sad animated journey that may have your kids asking why you’re tearing up so much.” He also praised its “textured world that is almost painterly,” pointing to small visual details such as snowflakes on mottled fur and moss on rocks. Those are Kennedy’s critical judgments, rather than a guarantee that every viewer will respond the same way.

Its premise gives the emotional story a distinctive frame: Roz has to learn care and community rather than simply complete a task. That makes it a natural pick for families and viewers who enjoy animated films that balance adventure with reflection. The Associated Press review is available in its January 2025 streaming guide.

A digital purchase is not the same as owning a disc: Universal describes digital purchases as a limited license subject to the retailer’s terms. A physical edition may suit viewers who want a disc or edition-specific bonus material; confirm what is included before choosing.
How does the film relate to Peter Brown’s books?
The movie is based on Brown’s 2016 illustrated middle-grade novel The Wild Robot. DreamWorks says the book inspired a trilogy that continues with The Wild Robot Escapes and The Wild Robot Protects. The books are a separate way to explore the story and its continuation; the film’s listed viewing and purchase formats are not the book editions.
