In brief: Rick and Michonne do not reunite in The Walking Dead series finale, “Rest in Peace.” Its closing images offer thematic closure about how loved ones remain part of one another, while leaving the couple’s immediate circumstances unresolved. Rick’s CRM jacket and the helicopter connect his scene to that organization, but the finale does not explain exactly where he is or what he plans to do.
What happens to Rick and Michonne in the finale?
The epilogue shows Rick and Michonne separately, not together. It gives viewers a glimpse of each character without showing a reunion or resolving their circumstances. Executive producer Scott Gimple said the sequence was intended to help conclude The Walking Dead as a story about the enduring connections between people, rather than function only as a preview of another series. He put its emotional idea this way: “Those people are a part of who you are because they’ve made you who you are.” Gimple’s AMC interview was published November 21, 2022.
What do Rick’s CRM jacket and the helicopter mean?
They connect Rick’s closing scene to the CRM, the organization associated with the helicopter. Gimple specifically pointed to the CRM logo on Rick’s jacket and the helicopter as signs of the world Rick inhabits—or may be trying to escape. The finale does not clarify his precise location, immediate situation, or plan, so those details should not be treated as confirmed by the epilogue.
Why does Judith’s belief in Michonne matter?
Judith’s confidence keeps the family connection alive even while her parents are absent from her day-to-day life. Showrunner Angela Kang said Judith knows her mother went to find Rick and believes Michonne will return because she promised to. As Kang put it, “As far as Judith knows, Mom is out there, and Mom is going to come back because she said she would, and she believes her.” Kang’s AMC interview was published November 23, 2022. Judith’s faith is not proof that the finale has reunited her family; it is part of the emotional thread the show leaves open.

Is the ending closure or a setup for another series?
It is both, but in different ways. Thematically, Gimple said the epilogue belonged to the original show’s conclusion: “There will be other stories, but this is wholly about The Walking Dead.” In plot terms, Rick and Michonne’s story remains unresolved in the finale, leaving room for a continuation. AMC later described The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live as continuing their love story and their conflict with the CRM. That description establishes the follow-up’s premise; it does not, by itself, explain that series’ ending. AMC’s announcement covers the continuation.
