Yes. The 2018 comedy Tag was inspired by ten friends from Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane, Washington, who revived their childhood game as an annual February tradition in adulthood. The film keeps the basic premise but changes the group, timing and details: its central circle has five friends, the game takes place in May, and real incidents are heightened for comedy.
Who were the real Tag Brothers?
The real group were ten Gonzaga Prep graduates who called themselves the Tag Brothers. They played tag as students, then let the game lapse after graduation as adult lives and distance intervened. Some of the friends later reconnected and discussed bringing it back; the game became a reason to make time for one another each year. The Spokesman-Review’s 2018 account described them as having played for nearly 30 years by then.
A 2013 Wall Street Journal profile reported that the recurring February game had been going for 23 years at that point. That is a historical count reported in 2013, not confirmation of how long the game continued afterward.
How did the real game work?
The friends played during February. They tried to tag one another using elaborate plans that could involve costumes, travel and help from family members. Whoever was still “it” when February ended carried that status for the next 11 months, until the following year’s game. The rules gave the group a recurring ritual—and a reason to keep trying to catch one another between annual gatherings.

What did the movie change?
| Detail | Real Tag Brothers | 2018 film Tag |
|---|---|---|
| Group | Ten Gonzaga Prep graduates, according to The Spokesman-Review’s 2018 account. | Five central male friends. |
| Timing | An annual game in February. | The game takes place in May. Director Jeff Tomsic said the filmmakers moved it because they were shooting in summer and wanted to avoid creating winter conditions on location. |
| Events and characterization | Some reported incidents inspired scenes. | Incidents are embellished, and the characters and plot are dramatized for comedy. |
Tomsic said the film drew on real stories, including a tag at a father’s funeral and a disguise, but pushed some events far beyond ordinary reality. As he put it, “We took some of these tags to outlandish heights; we sort of turned them into superheroes in their own minds through the game.” The movie is therefore based on a real tradition, not a literal record of every stunt, character or plot point.
What is the real story behind Tag?
At its heart, the real story is less about spectacular ambushes than about sustaining friendships through intentional effort. The annual game gave friends who had scattered a dependable reason to reconnect. The Rev. Sean Raftis, one of the Tag Brothers, summed up the film’s appeal this way: “There is a real sweetness to it – it’s about friendship.” Joe Tombari, another participant, put the work behind the tradition more plainly: “We make it happen.”
