The Last Great Time War is the conflict between the Time Lords and the Daleks—and the story that turns the Eighth Doctor into the War Doctor. The clearest account is the televised one: the Eighth Doctor’s reluctance gives way to a final-day crisis, then his later incarnation finds another way to end the war in The Day of the Doctor. The BBC describes the wider conflict as unfolding across multiple stories and media, with parts of the Eighth Doctor’s wartime history still uncertain.
What is the Time War in Doctor Who?
The Last Great Time War is a devastating conflict between the Time Lords and the Daleks. It is not presented as one continuous, fully documented campaign. The official Doctor Who site describes it as a conflict told across stories and media from different perspectives, and cautions that much about the Eighth Doctor’s time in the war is uncertain.
That distinction matters: the television episodes establish a central narrative, while licensed novels and audio dramas add other characters, events and viewpoints. They do not combine into a single, universally settled chronology.
How the Eighth Doctor became the War Doctor
A reluctant participant
The BBC’s account says the Eighth Doctor was reluctant to get involved and tried desperately to avoid the front lines. He spent time with the companion Bliss, though what happened to her during the war is unknown in that account. The identity of another companion is less certain still: the name may have been Sheena, Emma or Louise.

Those gaps are part of the published story, not a puzzle with one confirmed answer. Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor also appears across audio, novel and comic adventures, so not every licensed story has an uncontested place in relation to the war.
The last day: The Night of the Doctor
In the minisode The Night of the Doctor, the Eighth Doctor encounters Cass Fermazzi as her ship is crashing. He tries to rescue her, but Cass rejects his help because she hates both the Time Lords and the Daleks. They die in the crash.

The Sisterhood of Karn temporarily revives the Doctor. Faced with the war’s devastation, he accepts a regeneration that will make him a warrior. The BBC’s War Doctor guide places this choice on Karn, at the height of the Last Great Time War. This is the bridge from the Eighth Doctor to the War Doctor, played by John Hurt.
What happens on the War Doctor’s last day?
In The Day of the Doctor, the War Doctor believes the only way to end the conflict is to activate the Moment, a sentient weapon capable of destroying the Time Lords and the Daleks. The decision would make him responsible for the destruction of his own people as well as their enemy.

The Tenth and Eleventh Doctors persuade him to look for another possibility. The Doctors’ incarnations work together to freeze Gallifrey in a pocket universe. In the televised account, Gallifrey is not destroyed: its disappearance makes it appear lost, while the war ends.
Is there a definitive Time War timeline?
There is a useful order for following the main televised story, but not a definitive cross-media chronology that resolves every licensed adventure. The BBC explicitly describes uncertainty around the Eighth Doctor’s war period. Treat the sequence below as the television through-line, not a master order for every book, audio and comic.
- The Eighth Doctor before and during the war: His wider adventures span multiple media. The official account says he resists joining the conflict and tries to stay away from the front.
- The Night of the Doctor: Cass’s crash and the Doctor’s choice on Karn lead to the War Doctor’s creation.
- The Day of the Doctor: The War Doctor, with help from his later selves, chooses a plan that saves Gallifrey and ends the war as shown on television.
Licensed stories can broaden the picture without settling every question. Their different viewpoints are a feature of the franchise’s storytelling, not evidence that one medium supplies a complete chronology for all the others.

Choose by the perspective you want. The BBC notes that Big Finish has produced original Doctor Who dramas since 1999 and points listeners toward Eighth Doctor adventures, including Storm Warning and Dark Eyes, as well as Time War-connected releases. Its features also identify an Eighth Doctor Time War audio involving Cass, a Fifth Doctor story set during the war and War Master stories in Dalek territory.
