The best-supported explanation for references to Cher’s “medical complication” is her serious illness in 2014, when she canceled tour dates. Later accounts described an acute viral infection affecting her kidneys, and Cher said in 2015 that she had recovered. The sources do not establish “medical complication” as the name of a diagnosis or confirm that Cher or an official representative used that phrase.
What happened to Cher in 2014?
Cher became seriously ill in 2014 and canceled tour dates. The Washington Post later reported that the illness had been described as a potentially fatal mystery virus and that it affected her kidney function. That retrospective account supports a connection between the tour cancellations and a serious illness, but it does not establish “medical complication” as a specific diagnosis.
In an interview reproduced by Cher News in August 2015, the illness is described as an acute viral infection that affected her kidneys. This is secondary reporting, not a medical statement from a named clinician. Cher’s own comments in the interview describe how long and serious the illness felt to her, rather than offering an independent diagnosis.

In the reproduced interview, Cher recalled that she had been ill longer than she and others expected: “Truthfully… we thought I was going to be well a lot earlier than I was. But honestly, the doctors didn’t tell me how sick I was at the time.”

In May 2015, The Washington Post reported Cher’s statement that she had made a full recovery. The paper quoted her saying, “I’m feeling great. I’m not dying!” That is a report about what she said in 2015; it is not evidence about her health today.
