The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two is more focused on the rings and Sauron’s schemes, and its expanding world brings greater scale and momentum. But it is not better in every way: the many character threads still produce uneven pacing and episodes that can feel overlong. For viewers who enjoyed season one’s world-building and want its central conflict to gather force, season two is worth watching.
Is season two better than season one?
In important respects, yes—but “bigger and better in every way” overstates the case. Season two makes the rings more central to the drama and pushes the story toward larger confrontations. The current Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus describes it as a more kinetic journey that “discovers new virtues while retaining some of its predecessor’s vices”; that assessment reflects the reviews on the site now and may change as its review set changes (Rotten Tomatoes).
TV Guide’s Keith Phipps, who reviewed all eight episodes, praises the expansion of the drama and its escalating battles, while finding the storylines uneven in interest and the pacing persistently troublesome. Most episodes run longer than an hour, and installments can have difficulty feeling distinct from one another (TV Guide). That captures the season’s trade-off: more of the show’s grandest elements, but not a uniformly tighter or better-balanced story.

Season two is an eight-episode story set in Middle-earth’s Second Age, thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Its central conflict follows the forging of the three Elven rings and Sauron’s effort, under the guise of Annatar, to manipulate Celebrimbor into making more rings. The story also travels through Lindon, Númenor, Khazad-dûm and the eastern land of Rhûn (About Amazon’s season guide).

This ring-centered focus gives the season a clearer dramatic engine than a simple tour of Middle-earth: viewers can follow how influence, ambition and the promise of power shape the choices around the rings. The payoff depends on how well the show connects that central conflict to its many other characters and places; that is where the season’s unevenness remains visible.
How do the story and pacing hold up?
The season’s more kinetic quality is a genuine improvement for viewers looking for the plot to gather speed. Critics have also disagreed about how well the series uses its growing cast and scope. Rotten Tomatoes’ first-review roundup records praise for greater darkness, complexity and writing, alongside concerns about pacing and whether the show should keep expanding rather than follow fewer characters. Collider’s Carly Lane, quoted in that roundup, argued that future success “may lie in following fewer characters on their adventures and scaling down in the process, rather than continually trying to go bigger and better than anything that has come before” (Rotten Tomatoes’ first-review roundup).

The criticism is not simply that the season has many plotlines; its larger challenge is making each one feel equally consequential and each episode feel like a satisfying unit. Viewers who enjoy a sprawling ensemble fantasy may welcome the range, while those who prefer a narrow through-line should expect some stretches to feel slower or less compelling than the central ring conflict.
Does the spectacle justify the larger scale?
Scale is among the season’s clearest strengths. Reviewers have singled out the expansion of the world and the escalation of battle sequences. Production details help explain the range of its visual approach: Amazon says the season was filmed in the United Kingdom, with volcanic landscapes in the Canary Islands used for Rhûn material and a large set built for Khazad-dûm (About Amazon’s cast-and-creators interview).

The creatures also combine physical performance and digital work rather than relying on one method. Amazon describes the Barrow-wights as a blend of contortionist performance, prosthetic makeup, costumes and digital effects. Showrunner J.D. Payne put the process this way: “We’re going back and forth between the digital and the practical world all the time” (About Amazon). The practical contribution gives the production texture, while digital effects can extend what the sets and performers establish.
How well does it handle Tolkien’s themes?
Season two draws on Tolkien’s Second Age rather than adapting The Silmarillion as a whole. Its focus on the rings gives the show a natural way to explore power, persuasion and the consequences of seeking influence, but its choices about Tolkien’s world are not beyond dispute. One notable disagreement concerns the orcs: The Washington Post reviewer found the Durin III ring-corruption thread affecting, while criticizing the show’s treatment of orcs and its handling of the moral and political questions they raise (The Washington Post). That is a reviewer’s interpretation, not a settled verdict shared by every critic.

The season also brings Tom Bombadil into live action for the first time, played by Rory Kinnear. The character’s unusual place in the story presents an adaptation challenge: Amazon relayed showrunner J.D. Payne’s comment to Vanity Fair that “There’s a reason why he hasn’t been in prior adaptations, because in some ways he’s sort of an anti-dramatic character” (About Amazon, relaying Vanity Fair). The show’s inclusion of Bombadil, along with additions such as Barrow-wights and a Hill-troll, reflects its willingness to bring less familiar parts of Middle-earth into the television story.
