The Rolling Stones’ zydeco song is “Zydeco Sont Pas Salés,” a French-language rendition of a signature song associated with Louisiana musician Clifton Chenier. Mick Jagger sings the lead, Steve Riley plays accordion, and the 2025 7-inch pairs the Stones’ 2:50 recording with Chenier’s 3:14 version from 1965.
What song did the Rolling Stones record for Clifton Chenier?
The track is titled “Zydeco Sont Pas Salés” on the Stones’ side of the single. It is a tribute recording of a song made famous by Clifton Chenier, the Louisiana musician widely known as the King of Zydeco—not an original composition by the Stones. The release is a contemporary studio recording, not a live performance.
Smithsonian Folkways, Arhoolie Records, and Valcour Records announced the limited-edition 7-inch for June 27, 2025, the centennial year of Chenier’s birth. The release is listed as 2025 under Arhoolie catalog number ARH45599. Its two sides let listeners compare the Stones’ interpretation with Chenier’s earlier performance.
Who performs on the Stones’ version?
Smithsonian Folkways credits Mick Jagger with French-language lead vocals, Keith Richards with rhythm guitar, Ronnie Wood with lead guitar, Cajun accordionist Steve Riley, and longtime Chenier drummer Robert St. Julien. CC Adcock produced the recording. The official credits do not state when or where the Stones recorded it.

What does “Zydeco Sont Pas Salés” mean?
The title points to the French phrase “les haricots sont pas salés,” literally “the snap beans are not salty.” Smithsonian Folkways explains it as an image of hardship: rural people could be so poor they could not afford salt for their food. The phrase predates Chenier; Smithsonian Folkways’ biography says folklorists John and Alan Lomax documented a song containing the line in a 1934 field recording.
There are title variations across the release materials. Smithsonian Folkways labels the Stones’ recording “Zydeco Sont Pas Salés” and Chenier’s side “Zydeco et Pas Salés”; Valcour Records also prints “Zydeco Sont Pas Salés” in its tribute-album track list.

Why Clifton Chenier matters to zydeco
Born June 25, 1925, Chenier grew up near Opelousas, Louisiana, and became one of zydeco’s major ambassadors. Smithsonian Folkways describes zydeco as dance music originating in Black French-speaking communities of Southwest Louisiana. Chenier drew on Creole folk traditions, blending blues and R&B with Cajun and Creole music; he also adapted material from other styles, including blues and R&B songs in French.
The tribute project was assembled for Chenier’s 100th birthday and brings Louisiana performers together with artists including the Rolling Stones, Lucinda Williams, Taj Mahal, and Steve Earle. Valcour Records says profits from the album support the Clifton Chenier Memorial Scholarship Fund, which assists University of Louisiana at Lafayette students studying traditional music, specifically zydeco accordion.
