That choice gives an animal companion an unusually consequential emotional role in the Prime Video series—not an objective ranking of the show’s heroes, and not a claim about Tolkien’s books.
Why Berek’s loyalty matters
At the end of Season 1, Adar’s attack devastates the Southlands and transforms the region into Mordor. Isildur is trapped in a burning building, and his father, Elendil, assumes he has died and returns to Númenor without him. TIME’s recap describes what happens next: Berek refuses to sail back and runs off to look for Isildur. TIME’s Season 2 explainer
That is the concrete reason to call Berek a hero. The horse’s actions place him in opposition to the human characters’ belief that Isildur is gone. Berek does not merely accompany Isildur through the story; his refusal to leave makes the search itself an expression of the bond between them. The “true hero” label is an interpretation of that moment, not a neutral verdict on the show’s ensemble.
Who are Isildur and Berek in the series?
Amazon’s cast guide identifies Maxim Baldry as Isildur, son of Elendil and brother of Eärien. Berek is portrayed in the series as Isildur’s horse; the loyalty and search described above are plot beats from the adaptation. Amazon’s cast guide

The distinction matters for viewers who know Tolkien’s books: the available sources establish Berek as a character in the series, not as a named hero in Tolkien’s source text. The claim here is about how the television adaptation uses an animal companion to shape Isildur’s story.
What Berek’s search means for Isildur’s story
Berek’s choice gives emotional weight to Isildur’s separation from his family. While Elendil has returned to Númenor believing his son is dead, the horse’s search keeps the possibility of reunion alive. It also makes loyalty visible through behavior rather than explanation: Berek’s refusal to leave is the evidence, while the horse’s inner thoughts are not established by the recap.

Isildur’s story continues into Season 2 after the cliffhanger. Baldry described his character’s trajectory as a movement from boyhood toward adulthood through hardship. In an interview with AnOther, he said, “And, Isildur, my character, starts the season as a boy and ends the season as a man, and I think that’s the story arc of my character.” AnOther’s October 3, 2024 interview Berek’s search gives that coming-of-age story a companion whose loyalty is already clear, even as Isildur faces what comes next.
Where the series fits in Tolkien’s world
Amazon describes The Rings of Power as a story set in the Second Age, thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Its official guide says viewers can follow the series without prior knowledge of Tolkien’s books or the film adaptations, though familiarity can help them recognize references. - His loyalty drives the moment: Berek does not return to Númenor when Isildur is presumed dead; he searches for him.
- His action changes the emotional stakes: The search counters the family’s assumption that Isildur is lost and keeps their bond central to the cliffhanger.
- The claim is deliberately subjective: The sources support Berek’s loyalty in this sequence, not a ranking of every character’s impact across the series.
On those terms, Berek is a compelling candidate for The Rings of Power’s quiet hero: not because a horse outranks every person in the story, but because a single act of fidelity gives Isildur’s presumed death its most affecting counterpoint.
