After Solar Power in 2021, she stepped away from the constant pop-news cycle and released her next album, Virgin, in 2025. Her quieter public profile reflected a different relationship to fame; it wasn’t proof of a permanent retreat.
Why Lorde seemed less visible after Solar Power
Lorde became a global star at 16, when “Royals” broke through in 2013. The song spent nine consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and she won two Grammy Awards that year, according to the Los Angeles Times. Her debut album, Pure Heroine, established a spare, minimalist pop sound.
After Melodrama (2017), which turned a post-breakup night into vivid synth-pop, Lorde released Solar Power in 2021. The album’s sunnier, looser sound also marked a quieter stance toward celebrity and the relentless churn of pop and social media. A 2025 Los Angeles Times profile described it as music about leaving that constant churn behind.
In a 2021 interview with The Guardian, Lorde said she wanted to challenge the way audiences elevate celebrities: “we’re taught to view famous people as gods now – and I just wanted to dismantle that”. She also described feeling less connected to the wider cultural conversation and said, “I think it’s getting offline, but I really feel like I’m only just now scratching the surface of my powers, which is a very exciting feeling.” Those comments offer context for her lower profile at the time, not evidence that she intended to leave music for good.

The period between the albums was a four-year release gap, from Solar Power (2021) to Virgin (2025). That measures time between album releases, not how much music Lorde was making privately or how often she appeared in public. There is no reliable figure establishing how much her media visibility declined.
What Lorde did after Solar Power
She returned with Virgin
Virgin was released on June 27, 2025. Its sharper electronic textures and personal subject matter differed from the looser sound of Solar Power, showing an evolution rather than a definitive rejection of her earlier work. In an October 2025 interview with GRAMMY.com, Lorde explained her approach to making records: “I only write an album because I’m working through something big and private that I can’t do without the help of my art.”

She took the album on tour
The 2025 Ultrasound tour brought Virgin to arenas with deliberately minimal production. In October 2025, Lorde called the experience “a completely transformative experience for me” in Variety. That is her description of the tour then, not confirmation of her concert plans in October 2026.
She described a clean slate with her record deal
In March 2026, MusicRadar reported that Lorde had confirmed she did not renew her recording deal with Universal Music Group and described the clean slate as inspiring. That report does not establish that she will remain independent permanently or indicate when she might release new music.

Did Lorde quit music?
No. The release of Virgin and the Ultrasound tour make clear that she continued making and performing music after Solar Power. What changed was the pace and nature of her public presence: she was less embedded in the always-on pop cycle, then returned with a new album and tour. Her evolving sound—from the minimalism of Pure Heroine, through Melodrama’s synth-pop drama and Solar Power’s sunlit looseness, to Virgin’s electronic edge—does not by itself prove she rejected any previous era.
For a useful listen across that shift, start with Pure Heroine and then compare it with Virgin. The contrast makes the changes in sound and public posture easier to hear without mistaking a quieter stretch for a disappearance.
