The Netflix film behind the “easily the most daring feature film of 2024” claim is Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez. That superlative is a critic’s judgment, not an established ranking. The case for it is the film’s unusual combination of cartel crime, a transgender woman’s attempt to build a new life, family upheaval, and an operatic musical form.
What is Emilia Pérez about?
In Netflix’s synopsis, lawyer Rita, played by Zoe Saldaña, receives an unexpected assignment: help a Mexican cartel leader fake their death and undergo gender-affirming procedures. The leader begins a new life as Emilia Pérez, played by Karla Sofía Gascón. Her wife, Jessi, played by Selena Gomez, is also caught up in the consequences. Adriana Paz and Édgar Ramírez are also in the cast. Netflix Tudum’s film guide describes the premise, cast, and musical form; Netflix’s title page lists the film as a drama and musical, rated R, with a runtime of 2 hours and 12 minutes.
Why is it considered daring?
The boldness lies less in a single provocative element than in the collision of several: a cartel story, gender transition, a family forced to confront a changed reality, and songs presented within a crime drama. The film does not use the musical form as a brief interlude. Netflix Tudum reports that it is Spanish-language and contains 16 original songs.
A story built across genres
Gascón told Netflix Tudum, “You have an action movie that’s not an action movie, a drama that’s not a drama, a comedy that’s not a comedy.” Saldaña described the script as “this film noir that didn’t really exist in any of the conventional kind of genres, but it was a musical.” Their comments capture the film’s refusal to sit neatly in one category; they are actors’ descriptions, not an objective genre classification.

An operatic structure
Audiard wrote and directed the film. He told Netflix Tudum that its conception led him toward opera: “During the first lockdown, I wrote a treatment quickly, and I realized along the way that it was closer to an opera libretto than to a film script — it was broken down into acts, there were few sets, the characters were archetypal,” The score and songs are by Clément Ducol and Camille. Netflix Tudum also says the film was loosely based on Boris Razon’s novel Écoute, which served as a starting point rather than a close adaptation. The Tudum interview with Audiard and Guillermo del Toro discusses the film’s language, songs, and origins.
Does “most daring” mean it was definitively the boldest film of 2024?
No. Andy Meek used that phrase as a critical judgment in a BGR article published November 12, 2024; it is not a measured industry ranking. There is no statistic in the available reporting that compares films’ daringness. The film’s unconventional mix of subject matter and form makes the claim understandable, but whether it is the year’s most daring is a matter of interpretation. Meek’s BGR article also recorded contemporary Rotten Tomatoes scores of 82% from critics and 78% from audiences, plus an IMDb rating of 7.4/10. Those were snapshots at publication, not current ratings or evidence of daring.

What recognition did the film receive?
Netflix Tudum reports that Emilia Pérez won the Cannes Jury Prize and a shared Best Actress award for Gascón, Saldaña, Gomez, and Paz. At the 2025 Golden Globes, it received four wins, including Best Picture — Musical or Comedy. At the 2025 Academy Awards, it earned 13 nominations and two wins: Zoe Saldaña for supporting actress and “El Mal” for original song. These honors establish significant recognition, not a consensus that the film was the boldest of its year. Netflix Tudum’s report lists the awards.
