Blanchett received the 2005 Academy Award for Actress in a Supporting Role; the ceremony honored films released in 2004. The “only” claim needs a qualification: secondary records identify her as the only actor to win a competitive acting Oscar for portraying a real competitive Oscar winner, a distinction the Academy’s award records do not themselves certify.
Who won an Oscar for playing an Oscar winner?
Cate Blanchett is the answer under the specific definition that the portrayed person was real and had won a competitive acting Oscar. In The Aviator, she portrayed Katharine Hepburn, who won four competitive Best Actress Oscars, according to a records compilation. That figure comes from the compilation, rather than an Academy biography established here.

The Academy’s record confirms Blanchett’s own win: Actress in a Supporting Role for The Aviator at the 77th Academy Awards, held February 27, 2005. The ceremony recognized films released in 2004. See the Academy’s 2005 ceremony record.
What does “the only” mean?
The Academy’s ceremony database confirms Blanchett’s award, but it does not designate her a unique record-holder. Secondary records describe her as the only actor to win a competitive acting Oscar for portraying a real person who had won a competitive Oscar. The wording depends on those two limits: a real person, and a competitive award.

Why doesn’t Renée Zellweger’s Judy Garland count?
Renée Zellweger won Best Actress for portraying Judy Garland in Judy, but Garland’s Academy recognition was an honorary Juvenile Award, not a competitive Oscar. Under the narrower competitive-award definition, Zellweger’s win is not the same case.
How is Maggie Smith’s case different?
Maggie Smith won an Oscar for playing a fictional Oscar nominee in California Suite. That is not the same as portraying an actual Oscar winner, which is the distinction behind Blanchett’s record.

Which year should you use?
Use 2005 for Blanchett’s Academy Award ceremony and 2004 for the film year the ceremony honored. The two dates refer to different things: the ceremony took place in 2005, while The Aviator was among the films released in 2004.
