A Couple Cooks: 100 Recipes to Cook Together turns the everyday work of making food into a shared activity. Sonja and Alex Overhiser, the Indianapolis-based creators of the A Couple Cooks food blog, build in optional cues for dividing recipe steps—while leaving room for partners, friends, family, or whoever is cooking to find their own rhythm.

What is the cookbook?

A Couple Cooks: 100 Recipes to Cook Together is by Sonja and Alex Overhiser, the husband-and-wife team behind the A Couple Cooks food blog. The book’s premise is practical as well as social: recipes are designed to be made by two people working side by side, rather than simply doubling a recipe meant for one cook.

In a Midwest Living interview published April 2, 2025, Sonja describes how cooking became a way to connect with others: “We started to surround ourselves with other people who loved to cook and gradually fell in love with the process of not just making food, but doing it together.”

How does the two-cook format work?

Symbols alongside recipe steps suggest ways to split the work between cooks. They are prompts, not rules: one person might chop while the other prepares a sauce, for example, but the recipe does not require a fixed division of labor. Sonja calls the cues “a starting point,” and says partners can take turns leading.

That flexibility matters because cooking together can mean different things to different people. The format can suit a couple, friends sharing dinner, a parent and child, or a family preparing a meal together. The point is to make collaboration easier, not to assume that every kitchen has the same number of cooks or the same routine.

What kinds of recipes and guidance are included?

The book’s 100 recipes span everyday meals, dishes for two, gatherings, breakfasts, baking, and cocktails, according to the authors’ official cookbook page. The same page says 75% of the recipes are vegetarian, 50% vegan, and 70% gluten-free. Those are the authors’ published figures; the page does not explain how the categories were counted.

Beyond recipes, the authors say the book includes advice on meal planning, hosting, setting a table, using herbs, pairing wine, and home-bar topics. That mix makes it relevant not only to people looking for dinner ideas, but also to readers who want help planning a gathering or making a shared meal feel special.

Can cooking together fit an ordinary week?

It does not have to mean turning every dinner into an event. In the Midwest Living interview, Sonja recommends planning one or two meals ahead while accepting that not every night needs to feel special. That approach keeps the book’s social premise grounded in the reality of regular cooking: share the work when it helps, and let a routine meal remain routine.

The Overhisers previously wrote Pretty Simple Cooking, which the interview and book page describe as a vegetarian cookbook. Here, the emphasis is broader than a single dietary identity: the recipes cover a range of occasions, and the authors frame cooking together as a way to spend time with other people.
