Its “shopaholics” framing is attention-grabbing, not a clinical diagnosis: the film’s premise does not establish that any one marketing tactic causes compulsive buying.
What is Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy about?
Released on Netflix on November 20, 2024, the documentary was written and directed by Nic Stacey. Netflix describes it as an examination of brand tactics that promote continued consumption and the consequences of discarded purchases. That is the film’s stated subject and thesis, rather than independent proof of every claim made in it. Netflix Media Center and Netflix Tudum provide the release and film details.
Which shopping tactics does the film discuss?
A BGR article about the documentary identifies several examples it says the film discusses. They illustrate the film’s focus on retail and digital selling strategies; they should not be read as proof that these practices work on every shopper or cause compulsive buying.
- Store placement: putting everyday staples farther inside a shop, so shoppers pass other products on the way.
- Urgency cues: limited-time promotions and low-stock messages that encourage a quick decision.
- Promotional events: sales and other campaigns built to prompt purchases.
- Personalized recommendations: suggestions tailored to a shopper’s browsing or buying activity.
- One-click purchasing: reducing the steps between deciding to buy and completing an order.
BGR also notes that the documentary features commentators with experience at companies including Amazon and Apple. BGR’s coverage is the source for the specific tactics listed above.

Does the documentary show that marketing makes people “shopaholics”?
No. The phrase “shopaholics” in the headline is colloquial, not a diagnosis. The available descriptions and coverage identify behaviors and tactics the documentary examines, but do not establish the diagnostic status of compulsive buying or prove that a particular marketing practice causes it. They also provide no named, independently verifiable statistic or expert quotation that would support a clinical claim.
Netflix Tudum uses the familiar question “Can’t Stop Adding to Cart?” as promotional language. That phrase, like “shopaholics,” helps frame the subject for viewers; it should not be mistaken for a clinical conclusion. Netflix Tudum’s article describes the film and its framing.
