Lilo & Stitch began as a story about an alien alone in a forest, not a Hawaiian girl and her blue companion. During development, a shift from animals to people—and then from rural Kansas to Hawai‘i—changed the film’s setting, emotional focus and cultural grounding. Its distinctive watercolor look also grew directly from creator Chris Sanders’s drawings.
Was Stitch originally supposed to be in Kansas?
In Chris Sanders’s first-person account of the pitch, the premise was an alien creature living alone in a great forest. He described it as “a bizarre animal that lived alone in a great forest: an alien, who must learn and come to grips with who he really was.” Sanders’s account focuses on the character and his isolation.

Disney’s December 2002 newsletter gives a more specific early setting: rural Kansas, where Stitch interacted entirely with animals. These accounts describe the early concept from different angles; they do not lay out every intermediate draft or establish a complete alternate screenplay. Disney’s 2002 newsletter says the character idea went back nearly 17 years, in the newsletter’s approximate retrospective wording, and that Sanders revisited it around 1997 as a character-driven film.
Why did the story move from animals to people?
Sanders recounts that then-president of Disney Feature Animation Thomas Schumacher suggested the story would gain contrast if the alien entered a human world. As Sanders quotes him: “The animal world is, in a sense, already alien to us. Placing that alien in a human world would give the story a better contrast.” This is Schumacher’s advice as remembered by Sanders, not a separately sourced interview with Schumacher.

- Lilo?s an independent little girl; Stitch is a mischievous creature from outer space, and when their worlds collide, it?s love ? and chaos! ? at first sight.
The note changed the premise’s social world. Instead of an outsider surrounded by animals, Stitch could be an outsider among people, making relationships—and the question of belonging—central to the story that became Lilo & Stitch.
Why did the setting change from Kansas to Hawai‘i?
Disney’s 2002 newsletter says a well-timed Hawai‘i vacation led Sanders to move the story “from the barnyard to the beach.” In a later interview, producer Clark Spencer recalled Sanders looking at a map of the Hawaiian islands and deciding that an island in the Pacific could be more remote than Kansas. The accounts come from different moments and should not be collapsed into a single quoted explanation. Spencer’s retrospective account connects that location choice to the people and culture of Hawai‘i, which helped give the story its emotional center.

The production also involved on-location research. Disney’s contemporaneous newsletter says the filmmakers and artistic supervisors spent two weeks in Hawai‘i, mostly on Kaua‘i, studying scenery and local customs. A later Disney history describes study of hula and Hawaiian language, as well as work with cultural advisors. The newsletter says the team brought back the idea of “ohana”; Spencer later expressed the film’s family theme this way: “Ohana means family, and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.” That is Spencer’s wording in the Disney interview, not a comprehensive definition of Hawaiian culture.
How did Chris Sanders’s drawings shape the film?
Sanders says Schumacher agreed to make the film on the condition that it look as if Sanders had drawn it. The studio then worked to translate his designs into a consistent visual approach. Sanders recounts that artist Sue Nichols analyzed his drawings and created a guide called Surfing The Sanders Style, which incoming artists were expected to study.

Disney’s 2002 newsletter describes the result as soft-lined characters against hand-painted watercolor backgrounds. It also called Lilo & Stitch Disney’s first full-length animated movie since Dumbo to use only watercolor backgrounds; that distinction is Disney’s contemporaneous claim. The handmade look was not an incidental finish: it was part of the condition under which the project was made.
What is established about the film that was almost made?
The documented differences are substantial but specific: the early concept centered on an isolated alien, Disney’s newsletter places an animal-centered version in rural Kansas, and the finished film brings Stitch into a human family’s life in Hawai‘i. The setting pivot also made Hawaiian culture and the film’s family theme integral to its identity.

The evidence does not establish a detailed abandoned screenplay, a near-complete alternate movie, a specific original ending, or particular scenes that were cut. The development story is best understood as a series of creative pivots rather than a fully formed different film that was later discarded.
