The city identifies its Riverfront District as a backdrop for the film, though that does not mean every scene was shot there. St. Helens is a real town—not the fictional Halloweentown from the story—and visitors can use a local museum association’s map to find 11 related locations.
Where was Halloweentown filmed?
The City of St. Helens says its Riverfront District served as a backdrop for the 1998 Disney Channel Original Movie Halloweentown. The setting is in Oregon, about 30 miles northwest of Portland, according to Travel Oregon. The city’s account describes the district’s role, not a claim that the entire movie was filmed in St. Helens.

The connection has become part of the town’s Halloween identity. In 2017, the city described an October community tribute to the movie and its fictional Cromwell family. For the film-location connection, however, the key detail is specific: St. Helens’ Riverfront District was a real-world backdrop for the movie.
Is Halloweentown a real place?
Not as the fictional town shown in the movie. Halloweentown is the story’s imaginary setting; St. Helens is the real Oregon town associated with its filming. The distinction matters if you are planning a visit: you can see places connected with the production, rather than travel to a town that exists exactly as it appears in the film.

Can you visit Halloweentown filming locations?
Yes. Travel Oregon points visitors to a map from the Columbia County Historical Society and Museum Association that identifies 11 Halloweentown locations. It is the clearest Halloweentown-specific guide cited in the regional visitor information. The same Travel Oregon page also references Oregon Film Trail and SetJetters resources.
For an independent visit, use the museum association’s map to plan a self-guided walk, then check current access for individual sites. A location’s appearance in a film does not by itself mean the building is open to the public or that interior access is available.

What is happening in St. Helens in 2026?
Columbia County’s event listing schedules a Spirit of Halloweentown museum fundraiser for October 17–18, 2026. The listing describes groups entering the John Gumm Building Auditorium for photographs with original movie props and an opportunity to hear Jerry Cole speak about filming. It also identifies the auditorium as the movie’s “Halloweentown Recreational Center.”
Check the official county event listing before making plans: event hours, admission, and access details should be confirmed there. The county page also links the museum’s walking-tour map and reports that it has been viewed more than 670,000 times; that figure is undated and is not a visitor or attendance count.
