Being reported missing from a cruise ship does not, by itself, establish that a passenger went overboard—or explain what happened. The available case-specific reporting supports careful accounts of four incidents: Kevin McGrath’s disappearance aboard Carnival Conquest in 2023, an unidentified passenger reported overboard from Quantum of the Seas that year, and Jennifer Ellis Seitz’s disappearance from Norwegian Pearl in 2008. The sources do not establish the original article’s full list of seven cases, so this account does not pretend to reproduce it.
Why “missing” and “overboard” are not interchangeable
A person may be reported missing because family or crew cannot locate them. That status does not establish how they disappeared. “Reported overboard” is appropriate only when reporting says an overboard event was reported or observed. Likewise, an incomplete search or a search suspension does not determine what happened.
The cases below are distinct incidents, not evidence of a shared explanation or a basis for ranking blame. The reporting establishes different last-known timelines, search responses, and limits on what investigators or rescuers could determine.
Kevin McGrath: missing as Carnival Conquest returned to Miami
What was reported
ABC News reported that McGrath was on a family cruise aboard Carnival Conquest in 2023. His brother last saw him in his cabin early on the day the ship was due back in Miami. When McGrath did not appear for breakfast or disembarkation, his family reported him missing. ABC News’ report

Search and what remains unknown
Carnival crew, the Coast Guard, and Miami-Dade police searched the ship and surrounding water. Authorities said their review of surveillance did not indicate that McGrath went overboard. That is a description of what the reviewed footage showed—not proof that he did not go overboard. The report said his whereabouts remained unknown.
Quantum of the Seas: an unidentified passenger reported overboard
What was reported
On April 25, 2023, a passenger aboard Quantum of the Seas was reported overboard at about 11 p.m., roughly 500 miles south of Hawaii. The contemporaneous report did not identify the passenger or establish the cause of the event. Contemporaneous report

Search response
The ship reportedly searched for about two hours and deployed six life rings. The Coast Guard later suspended its active search after reviewing available information and discussing the decision with the passenger’s next of kin. Kevin Cooper, search and rescue mission coordinator for the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu, said: “After reviewing all relevant information of the case and discussing it with the next-of-kin, the Coast Guard has made the difficult decision to suspend the active search for the passenger aboard the Quantum of the Seas.” The statement describes the decision to stop the active search; it does not establish the passenger’s fate. Jennifer Ellis Seitz: missing after a reported fall from Norwegian Pearl
What was reported
CBS News reported that surveillance showed a person falling overboard from Norwegian Pearl on Christmas night in 2008. Seitz was reported missing about eight hours later. The Coast Guard searched more than 4,200 square miles before suspending its search. CBS News’ report

Investigation and limits of the reporting
FBI spokesperson Mike Leverock said agents “are still trying to determine if a crime occurred.” That statement described an unresolved question, not a finding that a crime took place. CBS News also reported that Seitz’s husband had not been charged. Any theory offered by relatives should be understood as the family’s belief, not an authoritative conclusion.

These accounts document reported events and responses in three cases, but they do not provide a comparable industry-wide count or rate of missing cruise passengers. Nor do they establish a single cause behind the incidents. In McGrath’s case, the cited report leaves his whereabouts unknown; in the Quantum of the Seas case, the passenger was not identified in the report; and in Seitz’s case, the cited FBI comment left open whether a crime had occurred. Those differences matter: uncertainty is not proof of a particular explanation.
