It is a critique of two different things: the show carries over story choices from The Last of Us Part II that some viewers find frustrating, and its own changes can create pacing or character-development problems. Whether the adaptation works depends on separating those inherited choices from its execution on television.
What “too faithful” means in this debate
Season 2 adapts part of The Last of Us Part II, a story told through Ellie’s and Abby’s perspectives. The critique is that the series may preserve the game’s divisive revenge-saga structure without making that structure feel more effective as television. That is different from saying the show reproduces the game scene for scene, or that all viewers find the story unsuccessful.

Ars Technica’s criticism also concerns adaptation choices of its own: the season’s pacing, flow, and character development. A weakness can come from the source material’s underlying design, from how the show reshapes it, or from both. Those are separate judgments, even when they combine in the same episode.
Why the show introduces Abby earlier
The Washington Post reports that the series brings Abby into the story earlier than the game does. Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog studio head and co-creator of The Last of Us, says the change reflects both the decision to split the story across seasons and a basic difference between games and television.

- Eine intensive, von starken Charakteren getragene Geschichte, durch das Erfolgsstudio Naughty Dog perfekt inszeniert
- Langerwartete Fortsetzung von "The Last of Us" kommt endlich auf PS4
- Dank modernster Motion-Capturing werden die Emotionen noch realistischer transportiert
- Unberechenbare Begegnungen mit Feinden durch das erstklassige KI-System
In the game, players spend time controlling a character. That direct participation can create identification in a way a television drama cannot reproduce. Druckmann describes the distinction this way: “When you play as Sarah, there’s something about when you play a character, you have an immediate empathic connection to that, and it’s a shortcut that the interactive medium affords us. We don’t have that here.”
The game’s perspective structure is also connected to play: players inhabit a character and develop that character’s abilities. As Druckmann explains, the series has no upgrade-tree constraint, so its creators can make a different choice about when viewers encounter each perspective. Moving Abby’s introduction earlier is therefore not automatically a failure of fidelity. It is a deliberate structural change that the television format permits—and whose success depends on whether it builds understanding without weakening the story’s intended impact.

How the adaptation compares across four dimensions
| Dimension | What the game does | What changes on television | What to judge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Narrative order and reveal timing | The story unfolds through Ellie’s and Abby’s perspectives, with Abby introduced later. | The series introduces Abby earlier. | Does the revised timing make the perspectives easier to follow, or diminish the effect of the reveal? |
| Identification and empathy | Players control a character and progress that character’s abilities, creating a form of involvement unique to play. | Viewers watch characters rather than inhabiting them through controls. | Does the show earn empathy through performance and dramatic context rather than assuming the game’s player-character connection will transfer? |
| Pacing and character development | The source story’s revenge-saga structure is part of what the critique questions. | The season’s pacing, flow, and character development are also criticized as adaptation-execution issues. | Is a frustrating beat an inherited story decision, or does the series’ arrangement make it less effective? |
| Expansion, alteration, and omission | The game uses interactivity and play progression as part of its storytelling. | The creators can use television’s strengths and change the structure; the available reporting does not establish a complete scene-by-scene inventory of what was expanded or omitted. | Does each change make the material work better on screen, rather than merely preserve or rearrange it? |
Does season 2 improve or weaken the game’s story?
There is no single answer independent of the viewer’s priorities. The show changes the timing and experience of the perspectives, while retaining enough of the game’s story decisions for its central structure to remain recognizable. An earlier Abby introduction can make her presence less dependent on the game’s later pivot; it does not, by itself, resolve objections to the revenge narrative or guarantee that her perspective is developed persuasively.
The creators describe their approach as deliberate rather than mechanical. Druckmann said the material brought from the game was “extremely faithful, to the point where I would often get emotional walking onto a set.” Showrunner and co-creator Craig Mazin describes the medium-specific aim: “There are things the game can do that we just can’t do as effectively,” Mazin explains. “But then there are things we can do that [the game] can’t do. And so, we just take advantage of what we have.” Those statements explain the intent; they do not settle whether every structural or pacing choice succeeds.

Early critical responses were mixed rather than unanimous. The review roundup includes praise for the adaptation and performances alongside complaints that the season feels incomplete or frustrating. That range matters: calling the show “too faithful” is an interpretive criticism, not a consensus verdict.
Should you play The Last of Us Part II before watching?
No. Playing the game is optional, not a prerequisite for following the series. If you want to experience the television story on its own terms, watch without treating the game as required homework. If you are interested in the adaptation debate, the game is a useful companion: it lets you compare reveal timing, player-controlled identification, and the way each medium handles the two perspectives. The original game is the relevant source for that comparison; edition availability should be checked with a current retailer before buying.
