Faiz Ahmad Faiz did not write “Irani Talaba ke Naam” about Delhi. Published in 1952 as a tribute to Iranian students, the poem became a way for a 2017 essay to think about Delhi students marching for freedom and ideals. Its connection to Delhi is an analogy across movements—not a change in the poem’s original subject.
Which Faiz poem is about students?
The poem at the center of Tahseen Alam and Parvati Sharma’s March 12, 2017, Scroll essay is “Irani Talaba ke Naam,” or “For the Students of Iran.” It is not “Hum Dekhenge.” The essay presents the 1952 poem as a tribute to young Iranian protesters and asks readers to hear its portrait of youthful defiance alongside Delhi students’ marches.

In the English translation by Alam and Sharma, the students are described as “these young men and women, are that rawest pearl of light.” That line is the translators’ English wording reproduced by Scroll, not an English original by Faiz. Read the essay and translation on Scroll.
What is “Irani Talaba ke Naam” about?
The poem’s historical subject is Iranian students. Scroll’s essay places it against political upheaval in Iran: Mohammad Mossadegh’s nationalization proposal in 1951, protests after Ghavam Saltaneh became prime minister in 1952, and the August 1953 coup that restored the Shah. It also recounts subsequent Tehran University protests and the December 7, 1953, shooting of three students. These events are part of the essay’s historical account; they should not be mistaken for a claim that the poem was written about Delhi.

Within that context, the poem honors young people confronting repression. The essay’s literary argument is that this image can resonate with students elsewhere who march for freedom and ideals. The resonance travels across place and generation; the poem’s named addressees remain Iranian students.
Why connect the poem to Delhi’s marching students?
The 2017 essay makes a comparison rather than identifying a single Delhi march as the headline’s exclusive referent. That year, student protest posters at Ramjas College included Urdu and Faiz poetry, as reported by The Indian Express. This offers contemporary Delhi context for the essay’s publication, but the Scroll essay does not name Ramjas in its body. The careful reading is that Faiz’s poem supplies language and an image of student resistance through which readers can consider Delhi’s marches—not that Faiz anticipated a particular Delhi protest.

“Hum Dekhenge” is a separate Faiz poem with a different modern episode. In December 2019, students at IIT Kanpur recited it in solidarity with Jamia Millia Islamia students. A complaint led to an institute committee review and public debate; committee chair Manindra Agarwal said the committee did not assess the poem’s interpretation. The Indian Express reported on the committee’s account.
That later controversy should not be folded into the 2017 essay’s subject. “Irani Talaba ke Naam” points first to Iranian students and the essay’s analogy with Delhi; “Hum Dekhenge” belongs to the 2019 IIT Kanpur and Jamia context.
