The service paired groups of three, then chose the meetup’s time and place. Soper was excited—and nervous—about his first blind date, though he thought going as a group might take some pressure off.
What Grouper’s six-person date involved
In a November 14, 2013 preview, GeekWire described Grouper as a service that matched three friends with another group of three and arranged when and where they would meet. Its pitch, as quoted in the article, was that “it’s like going to the bar. But way better.”
The preview reported a charge of $20 per person, which included the first round of drinks. That was the price reported in 2013, not a current price or a statement about whether the service is available today. The articles do not establish its present availability or terms.
Before the meetup: excited, with some nerves
Soper’s preview captures the anticipation of trying a blind date in an unusual format. “I’m 23, single, and ready to freakin’ mingle,” he wrote, while also acknowledging that he was nervous. How the night went
In his next-day account, Soper said he and two friends met three women at a Seattle restaurant. The evening began with some awkwardness and the usual introductory questions, then picked up through conversation and group games. He recalled that the gathering continued after the restaurant closed.
Soper summed up the date as “Slightly awkward. Super exciting. And lots of fun.” He found the experience easy to arrange and worthwhile. What made it different from a one-to-one blind date
The distinction in Soper’s account is the group setup: three friends met three matched people, with Grouper arranging the time and location. He hoped that having friends along would make the first meeting less tense; the recap describes an evening that was awkward at moments but ultimately enjoyable for him. The two articles do not offer a broader comparison with other dating services.
