Spoilers for Season 4 and the series finale. The Keepers are a secretive group led by community-college professors Gene and Jean Thibedeau. They believe their reality is the wrong timeline and work to bring about the Cleanse, a catastrophe that resets the universe. Their collection of strange artifacts is presented as evidence of earlier timelines—but the group’s beliefs and actions are not the same thing as neutral, all-knowing exposition.
Who are the Keepers in The Umbrella Academy?
The Keepers are a clandestine association in the fourth and final season, led by Gene and Jean Thibedeau. Netflix describes members as people who meet secretly because they believe their reality is a lie and that a reckoning is coming. Tudum characterizes the group as a cult-like support group for people who think they are living in the wrong timeline. Netflix Tudum’s Season 4 Easter-egg guide and its cast guide identify the Keepers and their leaders.
Why do they think the timeline is wrong?
The Keepers collect objects they regard as remnants of other timelines. Their barn is filled with artifacts meant to be recognizable to viewers from earlier seasons. Showrunner Steve Blackman said, “We wanted to find a collection of things that the fans would easily recognize, so we actually picked things from all four seasons.” The selection includes items connected to Hazel and Cha-Cha’s story in Season 1, the farmhouse in Season 2, the Hotel Oblivion in Season 3, and Season 4. Some objects were added digitally after the scene was first filmed. Blackman’s interview and guide to the Season 4 Easter eggs explain the callbacks.
Within the story, the collection supports the Keepers’ conviction that their present world is not the only version of reality. It does not make every conclusion they draw automatically correct: the artifacts are their evidence, their belief is that the timeline is wrong, and their plan is an attempt to act on that belief.

What are the Keepers trying to do?
They seek to enact the Cleanse, a cataclysmic event that resets the universe. Netflix’s complete timeline of The Umbrella Academy explains that Abigail created Marigold and that a second particle, Durango, also emerged. The Cleanse occurs when the two meet. In Season 4, Marigold is in Ben and Durango is in Jennifer; their contact sets the catastrophe in motion.
What is the Cleanse, and how does the series end?
The Cleanse is the universe-resetting catastrophe tied to the interaction of Marigold and Durango. As the danger unfolds, the Hargreeves siblings conclude that eliminating their Marigold is necessary to set the world right. They let the Cleanse consume them at the family home, sacrificing themselves so the Marigold connected to them is removed and one true timeline can be restored. Netflix’s Season 4 ending explainer describes their decision and its cost.
Blackman framed the finale around the question, “Are you really a superhero if no one ever knows that you exist?” The siblings save the world at the price of being erased from it; the ending leaves their sacrifice unseen by the people living in the restored timeline.
How the Keepers’ clues connect to the show’s visual language
The barn’s objects are the direct link between the Keepers and earlier seasons. A separate Easter egg appears in the subway storyline: the book Five finds bears an alchemy symbol previously seen on the Meritech Prosthetics building. Blackman connects that symbol with changing matter and the subway’s travel between timelines. It is a visual callback that broadens the show’s timeline imagery, not a piece of proof that the Keepers themselves use to explain their plan. Netflix Tudum’s guide discusses both details.

The Keepers and the comics
The Umbrella Academy is adapted from the comic-book series created and written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics, according to Netflix’s series information. The Keepers, as explained here, are part of the television series’ Season 4 story; the comics are the source material for the adaptation, not a dedicated explanation of the group.
