Walter Scott Jr., a founding singer of The Whispers, died June 26, 2025, at age 81 in Northridge, Los Angeles. His family told the Los Angeles Sentinel that he had battled cancer for six months; the reports do not identify a more specific diagnosis.
Who was Walter Scott Jr.?
Scott helped found The Whispers alongside his twin brother, Wallace “Scotty” Scott. The Los Angeles Sentinel reports that the brothers began singing while attending Jordan High School and formed the group in 1964. Walter Scott served as a signaleer in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War and returned to the group in 1969, continuing to perform with The Whispers for decades.
Which songs made The Whispers famous?
The group is best known for songs including “And the Beat Goes On” and “Rock Steady,” as well as “Lady” and “Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong.” The Los Angeles Times reported that 15 Whispers songs reached the Top 10 of Billboard’s R&B chart. It said “And the Beat Goes On” reached No. 1 in 1980 and “Rock Steady” reached No. 1 in 1987.
What did Scott say about the group’s success?
In an interview preserved by the Los Angeles Sentinel, Scott described the group’s recognition as validation from its audience: “We knew by 1981, we didn’t think of it as made it, we thought of it as the validation from our peers and fans that they liked us.”

Wallace Scott recalled that “from that point on, up until 1988 everything we recorded was either gold or platinum.” That is his recollection of the group’s recording history.
Who survives Walter Scott Jr.?
The Los Angeles Sentinel reported that Scott was survived by his wife, Jan, two sons, and three grandchildren.
