Public accounts describe Bill Gates as an engaged father who shared his curiosity about how the physical world works with his son, Rory John Gates. In a 2021 interview, Gates recalled taking Rory to industrial sites and said, “He has a deep amount of curiosity.” Melinda French Gates offered a complementary picture of Rory and family life in a 2017 essay. Those accounts provide examples, not a complete view of a private relationship or proof of what it is like today.

What Bill Gates has said about Rory

In a 2021 interview with The Guardian, Bill Gates described a shared interest with Rory in how things are made. “He has a deep amount of curiosity,” Gates said, speaking about his son. He recalled taking Rory to a power plant and other industrial sites, including a sewage plant, a garbage-processing facility, and a factory that made toilet paper and paper towels. Gates said the visits were interesting to both of them. Read the interview in The Guardian.

The examples suggest that Gates sought to share hands-on experiences and that Rory was interested in them. They are specific recollections from Gates, rather than a comprehensive account of their time together.

What Melinda French Gates has added

In a 2017 first-person essay for TIME, Melinda French Gates described Rory as curious, compassionate, and well-read. She also wrote about family conversations on gender equality around the dinner table. Her account gives context about Rory and the family’s discussions, but it is her perspective and does not directly establish the private dynamics between Bill and Rory. Melinda also recounted traveling with Rory to East Africa to see foundation work in Malawi. That is another example of her relationship with her son and their shared experience, not direct evidence about the father–son relationship.

What the public evidence can—and cannot—show

Taken together, the accounts portray a father who spoke warmly about his son’s curiosity and described shared outings, alongside a mother who remembered Rory as thoughtful and engaged in family conversations. They support a measured description of an involved relationship in the periods each parent discussed.

The accounts are historical: Gates’s interview was published in 2021 and Melinda’s essay in 2017. They do not establish the relationship’s current state, reveal its private complexities, or prove that the family’s experience was uniformly close or conflict-free. The parents’ divorce in 2021, on its own, is not evidence of a change in Bill and Rory’s relationship. A separate Irish Times report also recounted the industrial outings, but it repeats the public discussion rather than independently documenting private family life: The Irish Times report.
