Carl Gallagher’s relationships on the U.S. version of Shameless include girlfriends Bonnie, Dominique, Kassidi and Kelly, as well as a brief fling with Tish. He marries Kassidi in season eight. That is the character’s fictional story; it is separate from actor Ethan Cutkosky’s private dating life, which public reporting here documents only very narrowly.
Who is Carl Gallagher, and who plays him?
Carl Gallagher is a fictional character in the U.S. series Shameless, played by Ethan Cutkosky. CBS identified Cutkosky as Carl’s actor and reported in 2020 that he had appeared in over 100 episodes; the series ran for 11 seasons, according to CBS that year. Those are series-context facts, not measures of Carl’s dating history. CBS’s 2020 interview with Cutkosky.
Who are Carl’s girlfriends on Shameless?
The broad on-screen chronology includes four relationships commonly described as girlfriends—Bonnie, Dominique, Kassidi and Kelly—and Tish, who is listed as an ex-fling. The timeline below is a guide to the major relationship turns, not an episode-by-episode audit. The character summary and season account provide the broad chronology.
| Character | Storyline and outcome |
|---|---|
| Bonnie | Carl’s brief season-four relationship ends when Bonnie leaves. |
| Dominique Winslow | Carl later dates Dominique; her cheating ends the relationship. |
| Kassidi Gallagher | Carl meets Kassidi in season eight. They date and marry; the storyline is intense and volatile. |
| Kelly Keefe | Carl dates Kelly in seasons nine and ten. They separate, reconcile, and later break up after she cheats while attending the Naval Academy. |
| Tish | Listed as an ex-fling; the available account does not establish enough detail to describe the connection as a major romance. |
Who does Carl marry?
Carl marries Kassidi in season eight. He meets her through his basement detox operation, and their relationship quickly becomes a major storyline. TV Insider’s January 2018 coverage describes the pair falling in love and getting married. The story presents an intense, volatile relationship rather than a straightforward romance; the character summary describes Kassidi as clingy and says Carl returns to military school.

Sammi Hanratty, who played Kassidi, summed up the character’s intensity in a TV Insider interview on January 26, 2018: “Kassidi loves Carl, but she also loves her life with Carl, so everything is just extremely extra.” TV Insider’s interview with Hanratty.
Is Carl’s girlfriend Kassidi or Kelly?
Both are part of Carl’s story, but in different seasons and with different outcomes. Kassidi is his season-eight wife; Kelly is a later girlfriend in the season-nine and season-ten arc. Carl and Kelly’s relationship includes separation and reconciliation, then ends after Kelly cheats while at the Naval Academy. The available chronology does not establish Kelly as Carl’s final partner when the series ends, so she should not be described as his “endgame.”

What is known about Ethan Cutkosky’s real-life dating history?
Very little is established by the sources available here. In a January 2018 Cosmopolitan interview, Hanratty said she was in a relationship at the time and that Cutkosky “had his girlfriend” during filming. The article does not name that girlfriend, give dates, or verify a complete dating history. It also does not support claims that Cutkosky and Hanratty had an off-screen romance. Cosmopolitan’s 2018 interview with Hanratty.
Accordingly, Carl Gallagher’s fictional partners can be described from the show’s storylines, but Cutkosky’s private relationships should not be inferred from them. The reporting cited here supports only the limited contemporaneous detail that he had a girlfriend when Hanratty spoke to Cosmopolitan in 2018.
