Nick Kroll has said he comes from a wealthy family, and his father, Jules Kroll, founded the corporate-investigations company Kroll Inc. But the available reporting does not verify that the family is worth billions today—or establish Nick Kroll’s inheritance. The often-cited $1.9 billion figure is the 2004 price Marsh & McLennan paid for control of the company, not Jules Kroll’s personal net worth.
What is documented about Nick Kroll’s family?
Nick Kroll is the son of Jules Kroll, who founded Kroll Inc., a firm known for corporate investigations. In a 2018 WIRED autocomplete interview, Nick described his background plainly: “but I come from a wealthy family.” That is a first-person characterization of his upbringing, not a claim that his family has a particular net worth.

Fortune’s 2010 profile describes Nick as an exception in a family associated with the investigations business. It reports that he interned at Kroll Inc. in college and joked that he was poor at investigative work, helping convince him comedy suited him better. The profile offers context about the family business, but does not show that he became an executive or received a particular inheritance.
What do the reported company-sale figures mean?
TIME reported in 2021 that Marsh & McLennan paid $1.9 billion for control of Kroll Inc. in 2004, and that Jules Kroll received $117 million from the transaction. These are substantial figures, but they describe different things: the price for control of a business and the reported proceeds to its founder.
#1 Best Overall
| Figure | What it refers to | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| $1.9 billion | TIME’s 2021 report of the 2004 price Marsh & McLennan paid for control of Kroll Inc. | Jules Kroll’s personal net worth, the family’s combined wealth, or Nick Kroll’s inheritance. |
| $117 million | TIME’s 2021 report of the proceeds Jules Kroll received from the 2004 transaction. | His current assets or the amount, if any, passed to his children. |
A company’s transaction price is not automatically the founder’s personal fortune: it is the value attributed to the deal, while an individual’s proceeds are a separate amount. Neither figure is a current balance sheet or a measure of what any family member owns now.
Does the evidence prove the family is billionaire?
No. The cited reporting supports substantial family wealth and a large historical business transaction, but it does not verify Jules Kroll’s present-day net worth, a combined Kroll family net worth, or the amount Nick inherited. The $1.9 billion company price cannot be used as a shortcut to any of those claims, and the reported $117 million proceeds do not establish present assets.
Rank #2
TIME also notes that the Kroll business name has changed hands and that the company currently using the brand is separate from Jules Kroll’s control. In the same profile, Jules said, “I now compete against my own name,” referring to that distinction. A company sharing the family name should not be treated as proof of current family ownership or wealth.
What did the Kroll business do?
TIME describes Kroll Inc.’s work as corporate investigations and asset recovery. Its examples include a Kuwait assignment to locate Saddam Hussein’s assets, as well as services for corporations and law firms such as evidence gathering and background checks. That history explains how the family became associated with the investigations business; it does not establish a net-worth figure beyond the reported transaction.
Rank #3
In describing investigators’ role, Jules Kroll told TIME, “We keep the fish tank clean.” The remark captures his view of the business, rather than offering evidence about the family’s finances.

“Nick Kroll’s dad is a billionaire” and “Nick Kroll is the son of a billionaire” are reader-facing formulations, not conclusions established by the cited sources. Nick’s own statement supports describing his background as wealthy. The available figures support saying Jules Kroll received reported proceeds from a major sale. They do not show that he is currently a billionaire, that the family collectively holds billionaire wealth, or that Nick received a particular inheritance.
Those distinctions matter because wealth can change over time, and a historical sale does not disclose an individual’s current holdings or how proceeds were distributed. No reliable current net-worth figure or inheritance amount is established in the sources cited here.
