Emergency responders initially suspected a possible stroke because of her symptoms, but the contemporaneous report does not say she was diagnosed with a stroke. Minnelli later described a difficult recovery, and an institutional biography records her return to the stage in 2002. These historical accounts do not establish her health today.
What happened during Minnelli’s October 2000 hospitalization?
An Associated Press report published by CBS News on October 23, 2000, said paramedics responded to Minnelli’s Florida home on October 8. Fire-Rescue Division Chief Stephen McInerny described finding her semiconscious and disoriented, with one-sided paralysis, slurred speech and drooping facial muscles. Responders initially believed she might have had a stroke; that was an emergency assessment, not the diagnosis reported by the hospital.

The report said Cleveland Clinic Florida doctors diagnosed viral encephalitis. Minnelli was discharged on October 16, then readmitted three days later after becoming dehydrated. By October 23, the report said, she was recovering well. The contemporaneous AP report carried by CBS News is the source for those details.
How did Minnelli describe her recovery?
In a 2014 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Minnelli recalled practicing speech and walking as she recovered. “I started with the alphabet until it was right,” she said of working on her speech. Describing her effort to walk, she said, “I have to just try, one step.” These are Minnelli’s retrospective comments, not a clinical account of her treatment. Read the 2014 interview.

When did she return to performing?
The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s biography says Minnelli returned to the stage at New York’s Beacon Theater in June 2002, after her 2000 hospitalization. That dated performance milestone documents a return to work; it does not, by itself, establish the state of her health or mobility at other times. The LA Phil biography provides the date.
What is known about her hip problems?
The 2000 AP report also said a left-hip condition led Minnelli to cancel tour dates in May 2000 and noted two earlier surgeries on her right hip. Those are historical reports. They do not establish a current diagnosis, level of function, or present-day treatment.

What does her memoir add to the account?
Minnelli’s official website identifies Kids, Wait Till You Hear This! My Memoir, told with Michael Feinstein, Josh Getlin and Heidi Evans. Her official website provides the title and collaborator information.
In March 2026, Vanity Fair reported that the memoir discusses Minnelli’s substance use disorder and encephalitis. The magazine also says the book recounts an October 2003 episode in which Minnelli passed out on a Manhattan sidewalk. In the excerpt quoted by the magazine, Minnelli wrote: “I collapsed, falling to the sidewalk, almost comatose. I lay on the ground for God knows how long.” These are disclosures in her memoir as reported by Vanity Fair, not independently verified medical records. Read the magazine’s March 10, 2026 coverage.

What can these accounts tell us about her health now?
The cited material documents past events and Minnelli’s own recollections. It does not establish her current diagnoses, medications, treatment, or mobility. Her official website promotes her memoir and documentary but does not provide a current health update, so claims about her present condition should not be inferred from the historical reports.
