Why NBC Canceled ALF—and Why Its Ending Was a Cliffhanger

NBC left ALF off its 1990 fall schedule after audience losses and a sharper ratings decline following a move to Saturday. The production team, expecting a possible return or separate wrap-up, left the finale unresolved.

ALF was canceled amid declining audience numbers, with a move to Saturday followed by a sharper ratings drop. NBC left the series off its fall 1990 schedule, but the available contemporary reporting and later accounts from the show’s creators do not establish one definitive internal reason for the decision. Its cliffhanger ending was not intended to be the final word: the production team thought another season or a separate wrap-up might still happen.

Why was ALF canceled?

The clearest evidence points to ratings pressure. In a report published March 23, 1990, while the series’ future was still uncertain, The Baltimore Sun’s David Zurawik wrote that ALF had already begun losing audience earlier in the season. After NBC moved it to Saturday, its ratings fell sharply, the report said. The paper characterized the show as having been in the Nielsen Top 20 two years earlier, but did not give an exact rank or provide the underlying ratings data. Read Zurawik’s contemporary report, archived by the Los Angeles Times.

At the time, NBC had not publicly confirmed the show was finished. The report quoted network spokesperson Bob Meyer: “We just don’t know (what the future of the show is) at this point,” he said. “A big tune-in (of viewers) Saturday, though, can really help.” By May, however, ALF was absent from NBC’s fall schedule; a contemporary schedule report said it “didn’t survive the cut.” The Roanoke Times’ May 24, 1990, report on NBC’s fall schedule.

These sources support a ratings-and-scheduling explanation, not a definitive account of NBC’s internal deliberations. They do not establish a specific Nielsen position at cancellation or prove that one executive, budget dispute, or other single factor was decisive.

Why did ALF end on a cliffhanger?

The final episode, “Consider Me Gone,” aired March 24, 1990. It ends with ALF apparently discovered by military forces, setting up a story that the series itself did not resolve. The 2016 Mental Floss oral history of ALF helps explain why: creator Paul Fusco recalled that the team expected another season or at least an hour-long finale or movie. Staff writer Victor Fresco likewise remembered uncertainty about renewal, saying he believed there was a 50-50 chance the show would return. In his account, the writers would have wrapped up the story definitively if they had known the series was over.

Those are retrospective recollections from people who worked on the show, not an official NBC explanation. Fusco also recalled that Brandon Tartikoff had left NBC and that Warren Littlefield did not follow through on a wrap-up as Fusco understood the earlier promise. The accounts explain the production team’s expectations, but do not document a formal network commitment.

What would a fifth season have been about?

Fusco described a proposed fifth-season premise in which ALF lived on a military base. The family could visit him, and he would get into new schemes there. That was a plan discussed after the series, not a produced season or a confirmed explanation for the cancellation.

What happened to ALF after the series?

The story continued in the 1996 television movie Project: ALF, which picked up the thread of ALF’s encounter with the military. It offered a continuation after the unresolved 1990 ending, rather than a fifth season of the sitcom. The Mental Floss oral history discusses the show’s ending and the later movie.
