The “messy divorce” was a joke, not a literal split: in early June 2025, memes turned Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s public political rupture into a breakup spectacle. The sharpest recurring bits cast JD Vance as a child caught between feuding parents, compared Trump and Musk to Drake and Kendrick Lamar, and made their posts on Truth Social and X part of the show. These are examples from news roundups published June 6, 2025—not a ranking or a measure of what everyone found funniest.
Why the feud became breakup material
Trump and Musk had appeared politically aligned for much of the preceding year, according to The Daily Dot’s June 6, 2025 account. Their public falling-out supplied meme-makers with a familiar story shape: a high-profile partnership ending in a very public argument.
In its contemporaneous account, Gizmodo traced the immediate escalation to Musk criticizing the Republican budget bill after his White House departure event. Trump responded publicly, Musk posted on X, and Trump answered on Truth Social. The Guardian’s June 6 analysis described the relationship as a close political alliance that had turned into a public feud, with the bill, Musk’s government role, and other reported disagreements among the tensions. Those are reported explanations, not proof of either man’s private motives.
The online setting added a distinctive layer: the men’s exchanges played out on X, which Musk owns, and Truth Social, which Trump uses. The Daily Dot noted that platform contrast; it does not establish anything about the size or representativeness of either platform’s audience.

The memes that made the “divorce” joke work
JD Vance as the child in the custody dispute
The most persistent family metaphor made Vice President JD Vance the child caught between fighting parents. The Daily Dot described a meme showing Vance clinging to Trump and Musk’s coattails as the two were framed as divorcing parents. The joke turns political proximity into a mock family predicament rather than making a claim about an actual custody matter.
Gizmodo also highlighted a post by Tina Smith, identified there by the Bluesky handle @smith.senate.gov, dated June 5, 2025: “Who gets custody of JD in the divorce?” The laugh comes from applying a courtroom-style question to a political feud—and from treating a senior political figure as the child in the analogy.

Both men as Drake
Another gag borrowed the language of celebrity rivalries. Drake and Kendrick Lamar had become shorthand for a high-profile feud, but Anna Hughes’s post, quoted by both Gizmodo and The Daily Dot, flipped the comparison: “this is like drake and kendrick lamar but they’re both drake”. Instead of assigning Trump and Musk to opposing sides of the celebrity analogy, the punchline casts both as the same kind of self-involved protagonist.
The spectacle of posting back and forth
Some jokes drew their energy from the format of the dispute itself: one man posting on X, the other responding on Truth Social. The platform-specific back-and-forth made the political conflict look like a public breakup conducted through competing social feeds. It was a comic framing of the posts, not evidence that the platforms or their audiences were being compared by a measured standard.

Budget, Cybertruck, and other riffs
Gizmodo’s June 6 roundup also included satire about the budget dispute, a Cybertruck convoy, and the men’s online posting. These riffs used recognizable details from the rupture as raw material for exaggeration; they should be read as jokes, not as documentation that the depicted scenes occurred.

The Daily Dot’s headline count of 33 refers to the memes selected for its gallery. It is not an audience statistic, popularity ranking, or survey of public opinion. Gizmodo likewise presented a curated set of posts. The examples show recurring comic devices—family and custody metaphors, celebrity-feud mashups, and platform spectacle—but cannot establish which meme was objectively funniest or most widely seen.
