The Continental: From the World of John Wick is a three-part prequel about young Winston Scott’s attempt to take over the assassins’ hotel in 1970s New York. Whether it shoots itself in the foot is a matter of taste: one contemporary critic praised its action and production design but found its dialogue and humor less successful. Here’s what the series is, where to watch it, and what the available reception suggests.
What is The Continental about?
Peacock’s official description presents the series as an origin story for the hotel-for-assassins at the center of the John Wick universe. Young Winston Scott is drawn into a struggle over the Continental as he tries to seize control of it. The story unfolds in 1970s New York; Los Angeles Times critic Robert Lloyd describes Lower Manhattan during the garbage strike as its main setting, with flashbacks to the Bronx in the 1950s and brief scenes in London and Vietnam. A stolen coin press sets the immediate conflict in motion.
The principal cast includes Colin Woodell as young Winston, Mel Gibson as Cormac, Ben Robson as Frankie, and Ayomide Adegun as young Charon. Jessica Allain, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Nhung Kate, and Mishel Prada play Lou, Miles, Yen, and KD, respectively. Rotten Tomatoes’ series guide lists the cast and premise.
Does the series deliver as a John Wick prequel?
Robert Lloyd’s September 20, 2023, Los Angeles Times review is a separate critical assessment, not a review of the exact headline used here. Lloyd treats the plot as a framework for action: he finds the production design admirable and the action well staged, while describing the dialogue as serviceable and the jokes as not especially funny. He also judges the cast to meet the roles’ requirements.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That mix points to the series’ central trade-off. Viewers primarily looking for stylized action and a period version of the franchise’s underworld may find the setting and choreography appealing. Those hoping that a longer format will bring especially sharp dialogue or consistently funny humor may be less satisfied. These are Lloyd’s judgments, not a universal verdict, and they should not be mistaken for the thesis of the similarly worded headline.
How many episodes are there, and when did they arrive?
The Continental is a three-episode event, not a multi-season series. It premiered on September 22, 2023, with episodes released weekly on September 22, September 29, and October 6, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ editorial guide. Peacock’s current listing shows one season and three episodes.

Where can you watch The Continental?
Peacock lists the series on its official season page. Peacock’s official trailer describes it as available on Peacock in the United States. Streaming catalogs and availability can differ by country and change over time, so check the service’s listing for your location.
Do you need to watch John Wick first?
The series is framed as a prequel focused on Winston and the Continental’s origins, so its premise does not require prior knowledge of the films. Watching the movies first may add context for familiar characters and the hotel’s place in that world, but Peacock’s synopsis establishes the setup on its own.

It is a reasonable choice if the draw is the John Wick setting, a 1970s crime backdrop, and staged action across a compact three-episode story. The clearest caution in Lloyd’s review is that the dialogue and comedy did not impress him as much as the visuals and action. The available evidence supports that as one critic’s assessment—not as proof that Peacock’s choices, or the series as a whole, uniformly fail.
