Marvel announced the film’s full title, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, at its San Diego Comic-Con Hall H presentation on July 27, 2024. Director Matt Shakman also showed a pre-visualization reel that previewed the film’s retro-futuristic look—not finished footage from the movie.

The title was announced alongside a visual introduction to the team’s world. “First Steps” can suggest a beginning or a launch into the unknown, especially in light of the astronaut and rocket imagery shown at the panel. Marvel did not provide a definitive explanation of the title’s symbolism at the presentation.
Was the SDCC reel finished movie footage?
No. Shakman presented a pre-visualization, or pre-vis, reel intended to communicate the film’s tone and visual direction. TheWrap reported that he explicitly said it did not contain actual footage from the completed film. The images described by attendees and trade reporters should therefore be understood as concept material, not scenes from a finished cut or a public theatrical trailer.

- Set against the backdrop of a ?60s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel?s First Family faces a daunting challenge. Forced to balance being heroes with their family bond, they must defend Earth from a space god and his enigmatic herald.
What was shown in the first-look reel?
Descriptions from TheWrap and Variety portray a newsreel-style sequence built around the team’s public-facing image as space explorers. The footage was shown to convention attendees, and the following details come from contemporary event coverage.
- Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm appeared in astronaut outfits as the team approached a rocket.
- The reel included a rocket launch and a Fantasticar, the team’s distinctive vehicle.
- A classroom segment showed Reed addressing children in a “Fantastic Science” lesson about parallel Earths.
- The Thing appeared on a dating-show-style set.
- A large figure identified in event coverage as an apparent Galactus appeared near the end.
The combination of space-age presentation, classroom science, and a glimpse of a cosmic threat suggested a world that treats the Fantastic Four as visible public figures. The reel conveyed that impression through its newsreel framing; because it was pre-vis, it did not establish how these moments appear in the released film.
Is The Fantastic Four: First Steps set in the 1960s?
At SDCC, Shakman described the design as “a retro-future ’60s,” named Syd Mead as an inspiration, and said, “The ’60s, to me, is all about optimism,” according to Variety’s July 29, 2024 report. Marvel’s official film page later described the released movie as taking place in a “1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world.”

That wording supports a strong 1960s influence in the film’s design, but it does not by itself mean the story is set in the historical 1960s. The SDCC reel did not settle whether the setting was a literal period, an alternate world with 1960s aesthetics, or something involving time travel. “1960s-inspired” is the more precise description supported by Marvel’s official wording.
