The 82nd Golden Globes delivered an unusually strong mix of comedy, candid acceptance speeches and live-TV awkwardness. Nikki Glaser’s solo hosting debut supplied the sharpest jokes; Demi Moore and Zoe Saldaña made the night personal; and a nominee-graphic error briefly left viewers looking at the wrong actor. Here are the moments that stood out, with “best,” “worst” and “oops” treated as editorial judgments—not award categories or a measure of how every viewer felt.
What happened at the 2025 Golden Globes?
The 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards took place at the Beverly Hilton on January 5, 2025, with Nikki Glaser hosting. The ceremony aired on CBS and was available to stream in the United States on Paramount+, under the terms announced by the organizers. The official red-carpet preshow was scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. PT / 6:30 p.m. ET, hosted by Rachel Smith and Marc Malkin for the announced partner outlets. Golden Globes event information, published December 20, 2024.
The ceremony’s high points came from performances and speeches that felt spontaneous. Its rough patches were mostly televisual: a confusing nominee graphic, crowded on-screen fun facts and staging that let backstage movement show.
Best: Nikki Glaser’s opening and self-aware “Pope-ular” bit
Glaser began with a fast roast that targeted the room and the machinery of entertainment. TIME reported jokes about Ozempic culture, streaming services and the nominated film Emilia Pérez, including the line that the Globes were “Ozempic’s biggest night.” The opening worked as a comic showcase because it moved quickly between the celebrities in the room and the industry surrounding them. TIME’s account of the ceremony’s standout moments, January 5, 2025.

Later, Glaser put on a mitre and sang “Pope-ular,” a Wicked-inspired song. She then pretended to hear criticism of the number through her earpiece. That self-aware turn made the gag feel less like a bid for universal approval and more like a joke about the risks of performing live. TVLine included the bit among its notable moments; its ranking reflects that outlet’s judgment, not a consensus among viewers. TVLine’s review of the night, January 6, 2025.
Best: Demi Moore’s first Globe—and the speech behind it
Moore won her first Golden Globe for The Substance. She recalled being dismissed as a “popcorn actor” and reaching a point when she questioned whether she should keep acting. TIME reported that she connected her return to the role and the film’s recognition with a message she had received: “The universe told me that you’re not done.”
It was one of the ceremony’s most affecting moments because the award was tied to a specific personal doubt, rather than presented as a simple career milestone. TIME, January 5, 2025.

Best: Zoe Saldaña and Tadanobu Asano bring two kinds of surprise
Saldaña’s emotional acceptance
Saldaña won her first Globe for Emilia Pérez and became visibly emotional as she accepted. TIME reported that she thanked director Jacques Audiard and co-stars Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez. Her tears gave the speech its immediate force; the acknowledgments made clear that she was celebrating collaborators as well as a personal first. TIME, January 5, 2025.
Asano’s startled delight
Tadanobu Asano’s win for Shōgun produced a contrasting reaction: surprise that quickly turned to exuberance. TIME quoted his opening line, “Maybe you don’t know me. I’m an actor from Japan.” It was a disarming introduction from a winner whose delight was plainly part of the moment. TVLine also singled out his reaction. Worst: graphics and staging that distracted from the show
The Gary Oldman graphic mismatch
During the announcement of the nominees in a category Sanada ultimately won, Gary Oldman’s image remained onscreen while the other nominees were read. TVLine reported the mismatch as a telecast graphics error. It was not a mistaken announcement of the winner, but it briefly made the on-screen nominee identification confusing. TVLine, January 6, 2025.
Busy fun-fact graphics
The broadcast’s fast, wordy fun-fact graphics drew criticism for being crowded and difficult to read. As a viewer, the problem was practical: information flashed by while attention was already divided between the presenters, the nominees and the room’s reactions. Los Angeles Times live commentary also noted concerns about the production choices. Los Angeles Times live commentary, January 5, 2025; TVLine, January 6, 2025.
Presenter angles that revealed backstage activity
TVLine also objected to presenters standing at an angle that allowed the broadcast to show people moving and taking photos backstage during their segments. The issue was less a major failure than a staging choice that made the camera view feel unfinished.

Oops: the Vin Diesel–Dwayne Johnson acknowledgment
While presenting, Vin Diesel acknowledged Dwayne Johnson. TVLine described the room’s laughter as awkward, making the exchange feel more tense than celebratory. That characterization belongs to the reviewer; the moment’s significance is that an apparently brief acknowledgment became a conspicuous room reaction. TVLine, January 6, 2025.
How the night landed with viewers
The Los Angeles Times reported that the Globes drew 9.3 million viewers, citing Nielsen, and that figure was down 2% from 2024. It is a historical audience measure, not evidence that viewers approved or disapproved of the show. Los Angeles Times, January 6, 2025.
Verdict: a memorable live show, with a few avoidable distractions
The night’s strongest moments had a shared quality: they felt specific to the person experiencing them, whether Glaser’s knowingly risky comedy, Moore’s candid reflection, Saldaña’s emotion or Asano’s delighted surprise. The misfiring graphics and awkward staging were real blemishes, but they did not erase the human moments that made this ceremony worth remembering.
