The available reporting ties the extended production to the filmmakers’ effort to complete an ambitious story—not to a specific sequel announcement. That claimed connection remains unverified.
When is Beyond the Spider-Verse coming out?
Sony’s FY2026 first-quarter supplemental information lists Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse for June 18, 2027, under Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation. This is the current date in the studio’s published investor schedule: Sony’s FY2026 first-quarter supplemental information.
The date has changed before. Variety previously reported that the release had moved from June 4 to June 25, 2027. That earlier report documents the film’s scheduling history; it is not the current schedule. Variety’s report on the earlier date change.
Why was the film delayed?
A March 2026 SYFY Wire report on comments from producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller described the delay as connected to the filmmakers’ decision to give the story room to work as a complete arc. The report also mentioned the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike as a production disruption. This is a reported account of producer comments, not a comprehensive studio explanation of every factor behind the schedule. SYFY Wire’s report on the producers’ comments.

What is the latest production update?
In July 2026, Christopher Miller told the Empire Podcast that the team was “deep, deep in it.” As reported by GamesRadar, he described work in the edit room and checking footage for IMAX presentation. Those comments indicate that production work was underway at the time; they do not guarantee that the scheduled release date will hold. GamesRadar’s report on Miller’s update.

No specific announcement has been identified in the available reporting as the reason for the delay, and the reporting does not establish a causal connection between sequel news and the production schedule. The headline’s “biggest sequel news of the year” framing therefore cannot be treated as a verified explanation. The supported account is that the filmmakers wanted time to complete the story and that production work remained underway.
