How Selena Gomez says the friendship began
In a November 1, 2022, Vogue interview, Gomez recalled meeting Stevens at a New Year’s Eve party while she was going through a breakup. Stevens asked how she was doing, and the two talked for about two hours. Gomez later described Stevens as someone she had known for ten years who could challenge her perspective.

When Gomez discussed Stevens joining her on a trip to Kenya, she explained why she valued having her friend alongside her: “I think I just wanted my friend to come with me, and she is the kind of person who I’ve known for 10 years and can hold the mirror up to me sometimes.”
What Gomez has said about conflict and trust
Gomez’s account is not that the friendship was effortless. In a 2022 Bustle interview, she said: “I’ve known Raquelle for 10 years, and we put in the work. We’ve had the fights and gone through it all.” She also characterized Stevens as grounding, honest yet gentle, and someone who made her feel safe. Those are Gomez’s recollections; they do not amount to a full account of every disagreement or its resolution.

In a 2022 ELLE account of a Giving Back Generation conversation, Gomez described wanting friends who could be candid while remaining supportive: “I just needed people in my life that were going to look at me and unconditionally say, ‘Hey, you may not have made the right choice, but we love you, and we don’t think any less of you. We don’t think you’re a bad person. We just care, and this is kind of where you are.’”
The friendship is part of a wider circle
Public conversations about Gomez and Stevens have also included friends Ashley Cook and Courtney Lopez. In a 2019 Giving Back Generation conversation with the group, Gomez spoke about trust, support, forgiveness and growth, including learning not to spread herself too thin and to trust the people close to her. iHeartRadio’s coverage reported on that discussion.

Gomez, Stevens and Cook appeared together again in a 2022 conversation that ELLE described as addressing their roughly decade-long friendship, mental health and ways friends can support one another. Gomez said she valued friends who offered love as well as honest feedback. The public record is therefore about a circle of friends and its shared conversations, not only a two-person bond.
What a documentary filmmaker observed
Alek Keshishian, the filmmaker behind Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, offered his perspective in the same Vogue interview: “But the friendship survives all of those things because they do really love each other.” That is Keshishian’s observation as someone who worked on the documentary, not independent proof of the friends’ private circumstances.

What is—and is not—known about their relationship now
An ELLE profile published October 20, 2025 still described Stevens as Gomez’s longtime friend and recalled their public comments about friendship. That establishes how the relationship was presented publicly at that time. It does not verify the exact state of their private relationship in October 2026.
Social-media activity or fan speculation alone cannot establish that the two have fallen out—or that their private closeness has remained unchanged. The grounded account is narrower: Gomez has publicly described a roughly decade-long friendship that involved both conflict and support, while the available public statements do not settle its current private status.
