Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me is chiefly a family memoir, not a Hollywood exposé. Whoopi Goldberg looks back on her mother, Emma Johnson, and older brother, Clyde, sharing the childhood memories, family losses, and hard-won outlook that helped shape her life. The most startling account described in coverage is Emma’s two-year hospitalization while Goldberg was a child.

What does Goldberg reveal about her mother’s hospitalization?

In the memoir, Goldberg recounts that Emma was admitted to Bellevue Hospital by a male family member for what was described as “mental derangement.” According to the Los Angeles Times, Emma remained there for two years, separated from her children, and received electroshock therapy. Goldberg describes the effect of her mother’s return: “When she finally got out, she had no idea who we were.”

This is Goldberg’s account as reported in the memoir and by the Times; it is not an independently documented medical history. The episode is one of the book’s most painful childhood memories, and it gives the family story a stark emotional center.

How did Emma make childhood feel expansive despite hardship?

The family grew up in New York City public housing, but Goldberg remembers experiences that reached beyond their material circumstances. Blackstone Publishing’s description of the memoir recalls trips to Coney Island, the Ice Capades, and museums, along with memorable Christmases. Publishers Weekly describes Emma as a practical nurse and schoolteacher who worked to support her children, and also mentions outings to Coney Island and Radio City Music Hall.

These memories show a mother working to give her children more than the necessities of daily life: shared outings, traditions, and room to imagine a larger world.

What advice from Emma stayed with Goldberg?

In a CBS News interview about the book, Goldberg recalled her mother’s practical response to disappointment: “Cry about what you don’t have or figure it out and then go do it.” Goldberg said that advice reflects how she tries to move on when something goes wrong. It is one way the memoir connects a remembered family voice to her own approach to setbacks.

What does the memoir say about Clyde and Goldberg’s grief?

Goldberg’s older brother Clyde is remembered as a close companion and a keeper of family memories. In an AARP interview, Goldberg described his remarkable memory and her habit of calling him when something brought back a recollection. Texas Public Radio’s conversation with Goldberg also discusses Clyde’s love of travel.

Emma died in 2010, and Clyde died five years later, in 2015, according to the publisher. Publishers Weekly reports that Emma died after a stroke and Clyde after a ruptured brain aneurysm. Goldberg told AARP that she wrote partly because she feared losing the memories she wanted to keep or the things she still wished she could ask Clyde: “I was afraid if I didn’t write it down, I’d forget it all.”

She also describes continuing family holiday and birthday rituals. In that context, writing serves as a way to preserve memories, while the rituals keep family connections present in everyday life.

Is Bits and Pieces mostly about Goldberg’s career?

The memoir includes career milestones: her one-woman Broadway show, her breakthrough role in The Color Purple (1985), and the supporting actress Oscar she won for Ghost. But Publishers Weekly describes the book as keeping its focus on Emma, Clyde, and family memories rather than turning into a career retrospective.

That balance fits Goldberg’s own framing of the book as a tribute to the people who made her feel accepted and encouraged. Blackstone Publishing quotes her saying: “Not everybody gets to walk this earth with folks who let you be exactly who you are and who give you the confidence to become exactly who you want to be. So, I thought I’d share mine with you.”
