There is no single best sex education book for every child. Choose one for the reader it is meant to serve—caregiver or child—and match its subject matter and reading level to the child’s age, questions, and development. These titles offer starting points for ongoing conversations, not a replacement for them.
How to choose a sex education book
Start with the question you want to address. A book about gender identity, for example, may be affirming and useful without covering reproduction, puberty, or sexual health. Likewise, a broad guide may include topics a child is not ready to read all at once.
- Check the intended reader. Parent guides help adults find words and respond to questions; child-facing books are written to be read or explored by children, sometimes with an adult.
- Match the reading experience. Consider the child’s reading ability, attention, and comfort with illustrations, detail, or a longer narrative.
- Preview the actual coverage. Publisher age suggestions and specialist recommendations can help narrow the choices, but they are not developmental rules. Look through the book before giving it to a child, especially if it covers more than the question that prompted your search.
- Keep the conversation open. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says, “You won’t need to make a speech,” in its guidance on when and how to talk with children about sex. Its approach is responsive to a child’s age and understanding, rather than one formal talk.
The AAP’s 2016 clinical report says children and adolescents should be shown how to develop “a safe and positive view of sexuality through age-appropriate education about their sexual health.” A book can support that approach when it gives a family a useful way to talk, revisit a topic, and answer questions at the child’s pace.
Books for parents and caregivers of young children
Sex Ed for the Stroller Set — Laura Hancock and Karen Rayne
This is a caregiver guide for raising children under six, not a picture book for children to read by themselves. The American Psychological Association’s book page describes it as a resource for adults who want to build everyday, age-appropriate conversations. It is a fit if you want help responding to a young child’s questions and talking about bodies and related topics in language suited to that age.

The APA book page includes the sentence “A parent is their child’s best sex ed teacher.” The page does not identify a named speaker for that wording, so it is best understood as the page’s framing rather than an attributed quotation.
