There is no official One Piece ranking of pirate ships, so “best” depends on what you value. By story importance and emotional legacy, the Going Merry stands apart; for design and stated features, the Thousand Sunny has the strongest case. This fan-oriented ranking makes those criteria explicit and treats rival crews’ ships as a broader comparison, not a canonical top list.
How this ranking judges the ships
The comparison weighs five things: importance to the story, distinctive design, explicitly described features, construction or durability, and recognition. These do not produce one objective winner. The Going Merry’s significance comes from its place in the Straw Hats’ history; the Sunny’s case rests more on its design and described construction and power source. The rival ships below add range, but their details come from fan-maintained references rather than official profiles located for this comparison.
1. Going Merry: best for story and emotional legacy
The Going Merry was the Straw Hats’ first full-sized ship. A fan-maintained Straw Hat reference describes it as the crew’s main transport through the East Blue and Grand Line up to Water 7. Its importance is not just that it carried the crew: the ship’s eventual inability to continue became part of the crew’s story.
Bandai Namco’s Water Seven recap describes the crew seeking repairs after many voyages and the dispute over whether the ship could be repaired or should be replaced. That conflict makes the Merry a particularly strong choice for narrative significance: its accumulated damage forces the crew to confront a painful change.

The attachment is also visible in actor Iñaki Godoy’s response to the live-action set. Netflix Tudum quoted the actor, who plays Luffy: “It’s the Straw Hats’ home, and I am the captain. So it’s the best ship ever.” That is Godoy’s affectionate opinion, not a measured or official verdict.
2. Thousand Sunny: best for design and described features
The Thousand Sunny is the Straw Hats’ second ship, replacing the Going Merry, according to the official ONE PIECE character profile and the ONE PIECE FILM RED site. The character profile calls it Franky’s designed “dream ship,” says it is made using the treasure tree Adam, and identifies cola as its energy source.

Those official details give the Sunny a clear design-and-construction case: it is presented as a purpose-built dream ship with a distinctive material and power source. They do not, on their own, establish that it is objectively faster, tougher, or more capable than every other vessel. A fan-maintained reference supplies additional particulars, including its brigantine type, greater size than the Merry, and Coup de Burst escape feature; those details are not necessary to the official comparison here.
3. Oro Jackson: a legacy pick
The Oro Jackson broadens the comparison beyond the Straw Hats. A One Piece Wiki reference describes it as the ship Tom built for Gol D. Roger and says it was made from Adam wood. Those associations make it a natural legacy pick: its significance is tied to Roger’s crew and its construction. The cited material is fan-maintained, however, and this comparison does not treat it as an official ship profile or infer performance from its materials.

4. Moby Dick: a memorable silhouette
A separate fan-maintained ship reference identifies the Moby Dick as the Whitebeard Pirates’ flagship and describes its large whale figurehead and multiple masts. On the evidence available here, its strongest case is visual identity and its association with Whitebeard’s crew—not a quantified claim about speed, strength, or seaworthiness.
Which One Piece ship is the most iconic?
“Iconic” can mean different things: the ship most closely tied to a defining story, the most recognizable design, or the vessel fans most personally love. The Going Merry has the strongest story-and-emotion case in this comparison, while the Sunny has the clearest official description of its design concept and features. Fan discussions ask which ship readers like most or find more iconic, but those examples are not a representative poll; there is no substantiated statistic here that settles the question.

Is the Going Merry or Thousand Sunny better?
For narrative importance and emotional legacy, the Going Merry is the stronger choice. For a ship described officially as Franky’s dream design, built with Adam wood and using cola as an energy source, the Thousand Sunny has the stronger case. The change from one to the other is also why the comparison is not simply a contest between two designs: the Merry’s departure is part of the story that makes the Sunny the crew’s next ship.
A collectible for Going Merry fans
For readers looking for a physical tie-in, LEGO’s official US shop lists The Going Merry Pirate Ship (set 75639) as a play-and-display model. This is a product note, not evidence that the Merry ranks higher as a fictional ship.
