Reported backlash centers on two separate issues: viewers who found the finale’s open ending and character resolutions unsatisfying, and renewed criticism after the making-of documentary showed that filming began before the finale script was complete. Those are documented flashpoints, not proof of a single audience consensus.
Why are viewers criticizing Stranger Things season 5?
Coverage of the reaction describes two overlapping sources of criticism: story choices in the finale and questions about the production process that gained attention after the documentary One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5. Separating them matters. A viewer can object to the ending without believing the production was mishandled, or take issue with the process without disliking the story.
The finale leaves Eleven’s fate open
Some viewers objected to the finale’s ambiguity about Eleven, or felt that the closing stretch left character arcs and questions insufficiently resolved. The creators said the uncertainty was deliberate. “We want to leave her fate up to the audience,” Matt Duffer told TheWrap. The article reports that the writers debated the choice and that Mike’s hopeful account leaves room for viewers to believe she survived.
That intention does not settle whether the choice works for every viewer. For some, an open fate invites interpretation; for others, it withholds the clear resolution they wanted after following the character across the series.

Some viewers wanted more closure for the characters
Another reported complaint is that the finale’s coda leaves some character arcs feeling open-ended. The Duffer Brothers, however, described the final scene with the original group as the emotional destination of the series. Ross Duffer told TheWrap: “The basement scene with our core group of kids we’ve known for eight years, that’s where the show was going to end.” Matt Duffer described the scene as a goodbye to childhood and a passing of the torch: “That whole scene is about them saying goodbye to their childhood, the memories are always going to be with them but they’re moving on, and there’s a passing of the torch to the next generation.”
The difference is between a deliberate emotional ending and a fully closed account of every character’s future. Viewers may accept the former while still wishing for more of the latter.

Why did the making-of documentary renew the criticism?
One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 drew attention to how the season was made, including the reported fact that filming began before the finale script was finished. TechRadar and Tom’s Guide described viewer criticism in response to those revelations and the creative process shown in the documentary.
For critics, that production detail became a reason to question the finale’s execution. But the fact that filming began before the script was complete does not, by itself, establish that the season was improvised, rushed, or responsible for every complaint about the story. The documentary became a fresh flashpoint; it cannot tell us why each individual viewer disliked an episode.

Online accusations that the Duffers used ChatGPT to write the season should not be repeated as fact. TechRadar explicitly reported no evidence for the allegation. The documented discussion of production concerns does not substantiate it.
What does the season’s viewership tell us?
The Television Academy reported 59.6 million global views for the four-episode premiere week in 2025, describing it as a record for premiere-week viewership. That figure shows substantial viewing and attention; it is not a satisfaction rating and does not measure how many viewers disliked the season or its ending. The Television Academy’s retrospective provides the viewing figure.

The cited coverage documents complaints and the creators’ explanations, but does not establish what share of viewers agreed with any criticism. Social-media examples and high viewing totals cannot stand in for a representative survey of audience opinion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to understand the backlash
- Story reaction: Some viewers wanted a clearer answer about Eleven and more closure for character arcs.
- Production reaction: The documentary’s account of filming before the finale script was complete prompted fresh criticism of the process.
- Creator intent: The Duffers described the ambiguity and the final group scene as deliberate choices, not accidental omissions.
- Audience scale: Premiere-week views establish reach, not approval or the prevalence of backlash.
That distinction gives a more accurate answer than claiming that fans uniformly rejected the finale or that one production revelation explains every negative reaction. The reported complaints identify visible points of disagreement, while the available evidence does not quantify how widely each view was held.
