Start with the music you want to hear, then make sure you have a compatible way to play it. Buy records at a pace that lets you learn what you enjoy, check used copies carefully, and handle and store each disc to protect it. There is no required starter budget, collection size, or first-album list.
How do I start a vinyl collection?
Choose music before you choose a collecting strategy
Begin with records you already want to listen to: a favorite artist, a documentary soundtrack, or a genre you want to explore. You do not need to chase rare pressings or build a collection to a particular size. Buying gradually gives you room to discover which releases, editions, and listening habits matter to you.
Buy at a pace that lets you learn
Set a pace that suits your circumstances rather than treating a particular budget or number of records as a rule. Before buying, consider whether you can play and store the record properly, and whether the particular copy is worth its price to you. An unusually low marketplace price deserves caution; Discogs advises buyers to look carefully at suspiciously low offers in its buyer safety guidance.
What do I need to play records?
Check the whole playback chain
A basic record setup needs a turntable, a phono stage (also called a phono preamp), and equipment that produces sound. The cartridge’s signal needs to be amplified and equalized before it reaches a typical amplifier or speakers. Some turntables include a phono stage; some receivers or amplifiers have a phono input; other setups need a separate phono preamp.

Before buying, check the instructions and connections for the exact turntable, amplifier or receiver, and speakers you plan to use. Confirm where the phono stage is provided and that the output can connect to the next component. A turntable with a built-in phono stage can simplify a setup; separate components may offer more flexibility, but require checking more connections. No particular model is established here as the best choice.
How do I tell if a used record is in good condition?
Read the grade and the seller’s notes
Condition grades help buyers and sellers describe records using shared terms; they are not a guarantee that a seller play-tested the exact copy. Discogs says its marketplace uses the Goldmine Standard. Read the definitions alongside the listing, and check the media and sleeve descriptions separately: a disc and its cover can be in different condition.

Also read the seller’s notes for details that a grade may not communicate. If playback condition matters, ask a specific question about whether the copy was played, whether it is warped, or whether it has a known defect. Do not assume a format or release listing is itself a condition guarantee.
How should I handle and store records?
Keep fingers off the grooves
The Library of Congress advises: “Handle grooved discs (78s, 45s, LPs, lacquer discs) by the edge and label areas only.” That reduces contact with the playing surface. When taking a record out or returning it to its sleeve, hold it by the edge and label area rather than touching the grooves. See the Library’s care, handling, and storage guidance.

Store records upright and supported
Keep records upright, with enough support that they do not lean heavily or slump. The Library recommends sturdy dividers every 4–6 inches to support the full face of sleeved discs. Avoid stacking records, which puts weight on the discs below. Choose a cool, relatively dry, clean, stable location away from direct or intense light, vibration, radiators, and vents. Attics and basements may expose a collection to environmental risks.
For home collections, the Library describes about 35–40% relative humidity as preservation guidance; it is not a universal household requirement. It also says high-density polyethylene sleeves can replace record sleeves where possible. Use such sleeves as an optional protective measure, not a substitute for suitable storage conditions.

How should I clean a record?
Cleaning advice depends on the disc and the situation, so avoid treating any one product or method as universally safe. The Library’s public care page recommends canned air to blow dust from grooved discs. Its separate archival report, written in the context of audio transfer, discusses starting dry and then considering methods such as antistatic brushing or deionized water. It cautions against alcohol on disc records except in specified exceptions and emphasizes avoiding damage. Those different contexts do not amount to blanket approval for canned air, wet cleaning, alcohol, brushes, or a commercial fluid on every record.
For routine care, follow the instructions for the record and any cleaning product you use, and avoid improvising with solvents or force. Mold or unusual residue calls for specialist advice rather than an uncertain DIY treatment. The Library’s archival audio-transfer report discusses cleaning in more detail.
