Northern Lights Forecast for the U.S. Tonight: Where and How to Look

NOAA’s October 8 forecast points to possible increased auroral activity, not a U.S.-wide sighting guarantee. Check the live viewline, find a dark site with a northern horizon, and use local time when planning.

Aurora activity may increase overnight, but the latest U.S. forecast does not guarantee that the Northern Lights will be visible across the country. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center forecast issued October 8, 2026, at 12:30 UTC gives a maximum expected three-hour Kp of 5.67 (G2) for October 8–10. Whether you can see anything depends on your location, darkness, local conditions and how activity develops. Check NOAA’s live viewline close to your local viewing time.

What does the forecast say for tonight?

NOAA’s October 8 forecast puts the maximum expected three-hour Kp at 5.67 (G2) during the October 8–10 period. It attributes likely G1–G2 storming on October 9 to the anticipated arrival of a coronal mass ejection (CME) from October 7. These are forecast values, not observed conditions or a promise of a visible aurora. NOAA’s three-day forecast can change, so check the current issue before heading out.

The forecast is issued in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), not U.S. local time. The night of October 8 in the United States continues into October 9 UTC, and a single UTC interval does not map to one nationwide local-time window. For example, October 9 from 03:00 to 06:00 UTC falls on the evening of October 8 in Alaska and the western contiguous U.S., and overnight into October 9 farther east.

Will I see the aurora tonight or tomorrow night?

It depends on where you are and what the aurora is doing when you look. NOAA’s general guidance says Kp 6–7 might make aurora visible from the northern edge of the United States; Kp 8–9 can bring it overhead in northern U.S. states. The forecast maximum of 5.67 is below that general Kp 6–7 guidance, so it does not support a promise of visibility across the U.S. Kp is an approximate guide: NOAA describes the latitude relationship in geomagnetic, not geographic, terms. NOAA’s viewing guidance explains the other factors that affect a sighting.

For a location-specific expectation, open the NOAA Aurora Dashboard and look at its tonight/tomorrow-night prediction and short-term forecast near the time you plan to go out. Its experimental viewline is based on the OVATION model and forecast Kp; it shows the farthest-south locations from which the aurora might be visible on the northern horizon. Treat it as a forecast, not a guarantee: it cannot account for every local viewing condition.

How to improve your chances of seeing it

  1. Check the forecast close to viewing time. Use the dashboard’s current prediction and viewline rather than relying on an earlier headline or forecast interval.
  2. Choose a dark location. Get away from city lights if you can. Moonlight can also make a faint aurora harder to see.
  3. Find an open view north. A clear northern horizon matters. NOAA notes that aurora can sometimes be visible low on the northern horizon from well south of the aurora itself, but terrain and other local conditions can block the view.
  4. Give the sky time. NOAA identifies 10 p.m.–2 a.m. local time as a typical active window. Stronger geomagnetic activity can extend activity toward evening or morning, so do not treat those hours as a guarantee or strict limit.

What can keep you from seeing it?

  • Your location: The same activity may be visible farther north but not from your area.
  • Light: City glow and moonlight reduce the contrast of a faint aurora.
  • The horizon or sky: Local geography and atmospheric conditions can obstruct the view.
  • Changing activity: Forecasts and model viewlines help set expectations, but conditions evolve and a forecast does not ensure a sighting.
