Spoilers for major Dragon Ball Z plot events: The series’ saddest moments land in different ways: Piccolo protecting Gohan reveals a mentor’s care, Android 16’s death turns compassion into a catalyst, and Vegeta’s farewells expose love he rarely says aloud. There is no objective fan ranking; which scene hurts most depends on whether loss, parental love, or sacrifice resonates most with you.
Why these moments hurt
These scenes are selected for what they reveal about relationships, not because a poll proves they are the most popular. Each combines a bond with danger or loss, then leaves a different aftermath: grief, a changed character, a revival, or victory that still carries a cost. The distinction matters in Dragon Ball Z, where a death may be reversed in one story context while remaining devastating in the moment.
Piccolo protects Gohan from Nappa
Piccolo’s decision to shield Gohan from Nappa is an early turning point in their relationship: the former enemy acts to protect the child he had trained. The moment’s force comes from action rather than a long declaration of affection. In an official Dragon Ball interview, singer Reina Tanaka recalled, “I cried when Piccolo protected Gohan for the first time from Nappa,” and described their bond as important to understanding Piccolo. That is her personal response, not a claim about every fan’s reaction. Dragon Ball Official Site interview.
Future Gohan’s death and Trunks’s loss
Future Trunks’s story is shaped by a world in which the Androids have taken away the fighters who might have defended it. Future Gohan’s death is often named in fan discussions as a particularly painful moment, especially because of what it means for Trunks and his future. Those comments are anecdotal, not a representative survey, and they do not establish an objective ranking. Fan discussion.

This tragedy belongs to Trunks’s future timeline; it should not be confused with events in the main timeline. Its emotional weight comes from the loss of a protector and the burden left with the survivor.
Android 16’s final plea
Android 16’s death hurts because his care for living things is made explicit just before Cell destroys him. The Dragon Ball Official Site says that 16 had recently befriended Gohan and describes his final plea to protect the animals and forests he loved. He tells Gohan: “It’s not a crime to fight for good. The wild animals and the forests I loved… Don’t let them be destroyed… Protect them for me…” Gohan’s rage follows, but the scene’s emotional center is 16’s vulnerability and the cause he entrusts to the boy. Vegeta sees Future Trunks killed
During the Cell Games, Cell kills Future Trunks, who is later brought back by the Dragon Balls. The official Trunks profile distinguishes this from the earlier loss in Trunks’s own future: Cell came from that timeline, killed Trunks there, and stole his time machine. Dragon Ball Official Site: Trunks profile.
Vegeta’s fury at seeing his son killed is striking because he rarely expresses tenderness directly. Educational psychologist Daisuke Akamatsu reads that reaction as evidence Vegeta “clearly felt love for the future version of his son.” Akamatsu also notes that the manga does not extensively detail their relationship, so this is an interpretation of the scene rather than a definitive account of every aspect of their bond. Vegeta’s farewell to Trunks before facing Majin Buu
Before sacrificing himself against Majin Buu, Vegeta embraces Trunks, tells him to take care, and knocks him unconscious so the child will be out of danger. Tanaka recalled the moment as occurring in Kai episode 120 and called it “the epitome of a noble sacrifice.” Episode numbering can vary by release, so that number reflects her recollection rather than a universal anime index. The embrace matters because it gives physical form to the attachment Vegeta has struggled to show. Dragon Ball Official Site interview.
Goku’s sacrifice and Gohan’s final fight with Cell
Goku transports Cell to the Planet of the Kaio to save Earth and dies in the explosion. Cell later returns, and Gohan ultimately defeats him with the father-son Kamehameha, with Goku’s spirit supporting him. Dragon Ball Official Site: Cell feature.
The sequence is both grief and release: Goku’s choice removes him from the world he saved, while his presence in Gohan’s final struggle makes the victory feel shared. The ending is cathartic, but it does not erase the loss that set it in motion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide which scene is saddest
There is no verified audience statistic here that can settle the question, and individual comments cannot stand in for a fan poll. A useful way to compare the scenes is to ask what kind of emotional loss matters most to you:
- Mentor and student: Piccolo’s protection of Gohan shows care emerging through action.
- Friend and cause: Android 16’s final plea leaves Gohan with both grief and a purpose.
- Parent and child: Vegeta’s reaction to Trunks’s death and his farewell before the Buu battle reveal love through anger and sacrifice.
- Family and the wider world: Goku’s death saves Earth, while his later support for Gohan makes the resolution mournful and triumphant at once.
- Survivor and future: Future Gohan’s loss gives Trunks’s timeline its particular tragedy.
Some losses are later followed by revival, as with Trunks after the Cell Games; that changes the long-term outcome without making the immediate grief unreal. The future timeline remains a separate story context. Different viewers may therefore choose different scenes without any choice needing to stand as the definitive fan verdict.
