Colman Domingo says Muncie Daniels’s measured, practical way of thinking is both his strength and his weakness in Netflix’s The Madness. In a November 2024 interview, Domingo explained why the series begins as a psychological slow burn, how he prepared to play a centrist media pundit, and what changes when Muncie has to act on instinct. The interview’s listing also names Fear the Walking Dead as a topic; Domingo’s earlier comments about Victor Strand offer a useful comparison, but they are not a record of what he said about that show’s finale.
Why Muncie’s pragmatism makes him different
Muncie Daniels is a media pundit who believes people with opposing views can still talk and find common ground. That outlook becomes a liability when he encounters the murdered body of a far-right influencer in the Poconos and is accused of the killing. The danger is not only physical: Muncie’s public identity and belief in dialogue are tested by a situation in which trust is difficult to establish.
In Kayla Cobb’s Nov. 27, 2024 interview with TheWrap, Domingo said Muncie believes “you can sit at a table from opposite ends, have a conversation and build some bridges.” He prepared by studying cable-news pundits and forceful interviews, including moments when talking heads were “really spicy.” His aim was to understand the style without making Muncie a copy of real-world commentators.
Domingo’s description of Muncie’s pragmatism is about process, not simply cleverness. Muncie takes time to weigh decisions and tries to remain cerebral. Domingo called that delay “part of his Achilles heel”: circumstances eventually demand choices before he can fully reason them through.

What Domingo means by the series’ slow burn
Domingo liked that the story initially stays close to Muncie’s psychology rather than immediately turning into nonstop action. “I like that the series is a bit of a slow burn at first, because it’s psychologically attached to Muncie and how pragmatic he is,” he told TheWrap. The pacing makes the audience follow how he assesses danger and whom he might trust.
The tempo shifts when deliberation stops being enough. As Domingo put it, “It starts to take off when he actually has to make some choices and really go for the gut and not just be cerebral about things.” The contrast gives the character’s caution a dramatic cost: his usual method can help him navigate a crisis, but waiting for certainty can also leave him behind events.

How Muncie compares with Victor Strand
Domingo’s earlier portrayal of Victor Strand in Fear the Walking Dead provides a point of comparison, though the two characters use pragmatism differently. In a 2020 AMC interview about Season 6, Domingo described Strand as “less emotional and more pragmatic” as he sought entry into Virginia’s compound. In a 2021 AMC interview about Season 7, he discussed Strand making pragmatic choices for his own survival and the character’s villainous side.
| Character | What pragmatism means | Pressure shaping decisions | Story setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muncie Daniels | Measured deliberation; he tries to reason through choices before acting. | Public accusation and danger to his family. | Contemporary conspiracy thriller. |
| Victor Strand | Strategic calculation, often centered on survival and control. | Threats and competition in an apocalyptic world. | Post-apocalyptic drama. |
The comparison is about different versions of a practical mindset, not an equivalence between the characters. Muncie’s instinct to build bridges meets a political conspiracy; Strand’s self-interested calculation is shaped by survival in a collapsed society.

How the paranoid-thriller setting changes the stakes
TIME critic Judy Berman framed The Madness as a “‘70s-style paranoid thriller” rooted in present-day polarization and misinformation. In that account, Muncie, a CNN pundit, is framed for a white supremacist’s murder after witnessing it and must work out which potential allies are trustworthy. That is TIME’s genre interpretation, distinct from Domingo’s comments about the character and the show’s pacing.
Domingo said the creative team wanted to pose questions rather than supply easy answers: “Our showrunners and our whole team were very interested in just raising questions.” The premise puts Muncie’s faith in conversation under pressure, while the surrounding misinformation makes it harder for him—or the audience—to know which account of events to accept.

What the ScreenRant Plus listing says about Fear the Walking Dead
The ScreenRant Plus video listing published Nov. 27, 2024 describes its conversation with Domingo as covering his “pragmatic paranoid character,” the slow-burn thriller, why Muncie is more pragmatic than many genre characters, and Fear the Walking Dead. The listing establishes that the series was among the interview topics; the available description does not provide a transcript of Domingo discussing that show’s finale. The older AMC interviews above are about Seasons 6 and 7, not the 2024 conversation.
Spoilers: what the finale says about Muncie’s choices
Spoilers for the finale: TIME’s Nov. 28, 2024 report quotes creator Stephen Belber and co-showrunner VJ Boyd explaining that the conspiracy appears planned, but Muncie becomes involved through a wrong-place, wrong-time chain of events. He ultimately does not kill Rodney Kraintz; Bobby Woods later kills Rodney. Muncie reunites with his children and ex-wife, but the ending retains a sense of fear and leaves misinformation unresolved. This is the showrunners’ finale explanation as reported by TIME, not a statement attributed to Domingo.
