In a 2017 interview with Scroll.in, Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi said he chose India for Beyond the Clouds because the country gave him the feeling he had imagined for the story—and because he believed Indian stories had more room to flourish than Bollywood films were then exploring. The conversation also covered the practical challenges of shooting outdoors in Mumbai and the film’s place in his career.
Why did Majidi make Beyond the Clouds in India?
Majidi described India as a creative choice, not simply a setting. “India gave me the proper feeling I had envisaged for the story,” he told Scroll.in. He added: “I strongly felt the connection would resonate more if the film were made in India.” He saw the country as a place where many stories could be told, while arguing that Bollywood was not exploring enough themes or portraying the realistic side of the world around it.
Majidi said he had been watching recent Bollywood films and had visited locations and studios. His criticism was therefore framed as an observation about the films he had encountered, rather than a claim that Indian cinema lacked talent or stories. As he put it: “India is a lovely place and it has a lot of potential for so many stories to flourish. But sadly Bollywood films don’t explore so many themes.” These remarks appeared in the interview published March 4, 2017, and should be read in that context.
What did the interview reveal about filming in Mumbai?
At the time of the interview, the shoot was under way near Versova jetty in north Mumbai. Scroll reported that it had begun on January 23; the article does not specify the year for that date. Majidi said he preferred outdoor locations to studio work: “I don’t like to shoot inside studios and prefer outdoor locations.”

He also described a practical obstacle: obtaining location permissions. Delays could mean renewing contracts and making the shoot more cumbersome. The interview reported that he planned to travel to Jaipur for the next schedule.
What was known about the film at the time?
Scroll described Beyond the Clouds as Majidi’s first Indian production and ninth feature film. It was being made in Hindi and English, with Ishaan Khatter in the lead and A. R. Rahman composing the score. The producers named in the article were Shareen Mantri Kedia and Kishor Arora of Eyecandy Films, alongside Zee Studio business head Akash Chawla; Honey Trehan was identified as casting director.

Majidi named Satyajit Ray, Vittorio De Sica and Federico Fellini as filmmakers whose realistic elements had influenced him. That interest in realism connects his comments about the kind of stories he wanted to find in India with the themes he said he valued in cinema.
What did Majidi say about politics and cinema?
Asked about political interference in the arts, Majidi said: “As far as politicians are concerned, they are not well accustomed to the film world and they don’t have an artistic mind to be able to tackle most things related to cinema.” The comment reflects his position in the 2017 interview; it is not a statement about a specific present-day policy or event.
