The Matrix (1999) follows hacker Thomas Anderson, known as Neo, as he discovers that the reality he experiences is a simulation controlled by machines. Written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the science-fiction film pairs that premise with action influenced by anime, Hong Kong kung-fu cinema and John Woo’s gunplay.
What is The Matrix about?
Thomas Anderson lives a double life: by day he works as a programmer, and online he is the hacker Neo. Drawn into a search for the answer to the question “What is the Matrix?”, he meets Trinity and Morpheus. Morpheus reveals that the world Neo has taken for reality is a machine-engineered simulation. The Library of Congress catalogs the deposited film as a 1999 work; the Museum of Modern Art describes its central premise as a hacker discovering that his world is an elaborate simulation created by machines.
This article concerns the original feature film, not the later sequels or the wider franchise.
Who made the film?
Lana and Lilly Wachowski wrote and directed The Matrix. Yuen Woo-ping choreographed its fight scenes. The Museum of Modern Art identifies anime, Hong Kong kung-fu cinema and John Woo’s balletic gunplay among the action influences, and names the 1994 film Fist of Legend as an inspiration. These are documented touchstones, not an exhaustive account of the film’s influences.
