That contradiction makes loneliness and the desire for companionship the poem’s clearest themes. The educational text available here attributes the poem to Kirkup; it does not establish a definitive edition or publication history.
What happens in “The Lonely Scarecrow”?
The speaker is a scarecrow standing alone on a hill. It describes its worn, makeshift body and clothing: “poor old bones,” ragged gloves, a peg foot, and labourer’s clothes. Exposed to changing weather, it presents itself as battered and overlooked. In the final stanza, it directly addresses the wild birds, asking them to nest in it and questioning why they always fly away.
The poem’s central paradox is plain: a scarecrow is intended to repel birds, yet this one wants their company. The appeal turns an ordinary farm object into a speaker with feelings and a wish to be noticed.
Why does the scarecrow invite the birds to nest in it?
Because it is lonely. The invitation is the poem’s most direct expression of the speaker’s desire: it wants the birds to stay rather than flee. The question about their repeated departure makes the loneliness more pointed; the scarecrow’s role keeps it separated from the very company it longs for.

This tension between duty and desire gives the poem its plaintive, slightly wry tone. The situation is sad because the speaker is isolated, but also paradoxical because its purpose is to frighten away the visitors it welcomes.
What does “I bear my cross upon a hill” mean?
The line can suggest that the scarecrow carries a burden or endures suffering. The “grave” language elsewhere in the poem may also evoke death or a grave-like existence. These are possible symbolic readings, not confirmed explanations of what Kirkup intended. The poem’s concrete image remains a solitary figure standing exposed on a hill.

An educational commentary also suggests extending the scarecrow into an analogy for people who work for others but receive little in return. That reading connects the figure’s labour and neglect, but it is an interpretive extension rather than an established statement of authorial intent.
How do personification and form shape the poem?
Personification
The scarecrow speaks in the first person, assesses its own appearance, and expresses a wish for companionship. Giving an inanimate object a voice and inner life is personification. It makes the conflict between what the scarecrow is for and what it wants emotionally legible.

Four quatrains and rhyme
The text has four four-line stanzas. In each stanza, the second and fourth lines rhyme: “stave” with “grave,” “undone” with “sun,” and “hay” with “away” are examples. The simple recurring pattern lends the complaint a songlike, accessible movement.
