Vader was the ring name of Leon White, the masked Big Van Vader in Japan and a heavyweight star whose career crossed the AWA, New Japan Pro Wrestling, WCW and WWE. His three WCW World Heavyweight Championship reigns, international breakout and posthumous WWE Hall of Fame induction in 2022 are the concrete milestones behind his legacy.
Who was Vader?
Leon White wrestled as Vader in the United States and became known as Big Van Vader in Japan, where he performed in a mask. WWE’s profile traces his rise through the American Wrestling Association (AWA), New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and, from 1996, WWE. He died in June 2018, aged 63, according to WWE and ABC News.
How did Leon White move from football to wrestling?
Before entering the ring, White played American football. ABC News reported that he was a two-time All-American center at the University of Colorado and was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the third round of the 1978 NFL draft. WWE says an injury ended his NFL career and that he began wrestling in the mid-1980s.
How did Big Van Vader break through in Japan?
White’s Japan persona combined the name Big Van Vader with a mask. WWE describes him as becoming one of New Japan’s major stars after a high-profile match with Antonio Inoki. In a 2011 WWE interview, White recalled how quickly the character connected: “It just caught fire.”

WWE’s Jim Ross, then associated with WCW and later a WWE Hall of Famer, recalled seeing Vader wrestle in Japan: “He was agile and very aggressive, so we brought him in.” WWE’s profile also notes that White competed internationally, including in Europe and Mexico.
What were Vader’s biggest achievements in WCW?
WCW was the high point of Vader’s U.S. championship career. WWE credits him with three WCW World Heavyweight Championship reigns and identifies Sting, Ric Flair and Cactus Jack among his opponents. Its 2018 notice also points to rivalries with Sting and Ron Simmons. These are WWE’s summaries of his record and career, rather than an independent ranking of his place in wrestling history.

After his WWE run, White returned to All Japan Pro Wrestling and formed a tag team with Stan Hansen, according to the same profile.

Vader’s career is best understood as a sequence of distinct chapters: the masked Big Van Vader became a major name in Japan; WCW gave him a three-reign world-title peak in the United States; and WWE brought him to a wider roster and television audience. WWE’s posthumous induction of White into the Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2022 added formal recognition from the company where he competed late in his career. Together, these milestones explain why his story is not limited to a single promotion, without requiring a claim that he ranks above other wrestlers.
