The approach works: each return to the past adds another layer to their strained bond, and the final conversation gives the season’s central conflict its most painful clarity. This is a quiet, deliberately paced episode—and its emotional force depends on the relationship work it has been building.
What happens in “The Price”
Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 6. Directed by Neil Druckmann and written by Druckmann, Halley Gross, and Craig Mazin, the May 18, 2025 episode reaches back to Joel and Tommy’s childhood before moving through the birthdays Joel arranges for Ellie during their years in Jackson. The sequence spans the five-year gap between the end of Season 1 and the start of Season 2, making time itself part of the story. The Ringer’s recap identifies this as the season’s only flashback episode.
Joel’s birthday gestures offer Ellie brief experiences of wonder and ordinary happiness. But the episodes of closeness do not erase the unease growing between them. The flashbacks show the distance accumulating rather than treating it as a sudden break.
Do the birthday flashbacks work?
Yes. The birthdays give the episode a simple, legible structure, while each visit to the past changes the emotional meaning of Joel’s attempts to care for Ellie. They are not just a montage of affectionate moments: the contrast between his gestures and the secret he is keeping makes the warmth increasingly complicated.

The structure also slows the present-day momentum. Viewers waiting for the season’s immediate conflicts to advance may feel that pause, especially this close to the finale. But the episode is not trying to build suspense through action. It is filling in the emotional history needed to understand what the characters have lost and what remains unresolved.
Joel’s idea of protection
The childhood opening adds context to Joel’s instincts without excusing their consequences. The episode connects his effort to protect Ellie with the model of fatherhood he inherited, and with the possibility that trying to do better does not guarantee that a parent avoids repeating harm. In a Vanity Fair interview, Druckmann described the father-son scene as exploring that uncertainty.
That framing gives Joel’s care real tenderness, but it does not make his choices neutral. His lie about Salt Lake City may have been meant to spare Ellie, yet it also deprived her of the truth about what happened to her. The episode lets both ideas stand at once: love can motivate a decision, and that decision can still injure the person it is meant to protect.
Why the Eugene and Gail story matters
The Eugene thread gives the episode a smaller, more immediate version of its central conflict. Ellie believes Eugene can be brought back to Jackson to say goodbye to Gail; Joel makes a decision that Ellie later challenges. Their disagreement echoes the larger rupture between them: what does care entitle someone to decide, and what does withholding the truth do to trust?

The Ringer notes that this storyline expands the television series’ material beyond the game’s treatment of these characters. It also gives the episode something more concrete than reflection alone: Ellie and Joel face a choice with consequences, and their different responses illuminate why the larger lie remains so difficult to forgive.
The final conversation brings the episode into focus
The last flashback returns to New Year’s Eve, after the dance. Ellie confronts Joel about the Fireflies’ hospital in Salt Lake City; he admits what happened and says he would make the same choice again. The admission does not settle the moral argument between them. Instead, it makes the cost of their disagreement unmistakable: Ellie now has the truth, but the truth arrives alongside the knowledge that Joel would not choose differently.

The scene offers emotional clarity, not reconciliation. It helps explain Ellie’s present grief and the fragile possibility of repair the two never had time to pursue. Druckmann told Vanity Fair, “It felt like a very important and intimate episode,” and said he welcomed making an episode without action, “It’s all drama.” That restraint suits the ending: its weight comes from what the characters say, and from what they cannot undo.

“The Price” is a character-focused penultimate episode that earns its slower pace by making the fracture between Joel and Ellie feel cumulative. Its birthday framework, childhood opening, and Eugene subplot all turn around the same difficult question: when does protection become a form of control? The final conversation does not answer that for the viewer, but it gives the season’s conflict a devastatingly clear shape. Viewers looking for a major action set piece will not find one; those invested in the relationship will find the episode’s quietness purposeful.
