Jaws (1975) is the strongest of the four theatrical films, followed by Jaws 2 (1978), Jaws 3-D (1983), and Jaws: The Revenge (1987). That order favors sustained suspense, memorable characters, confident filmmaking, and a story that holds together. Viewers looking for 1980s 3-D spectacle or sequel camp may rank the later films differently.

How this ranking works

This is an editorial ranking, not a claim about critical or audience consensus. Each film is considered for suspense and pacing, character and performances, craft and atmosphere, story coherence, and rewatch appeal. The last measure separates polished suspense from novelty or camp: a film can be fun to revisit without being as accomplished.

1. Jaws (1975)

Why it ranks first

The original balances its shark threat with a human story and a steadily tightening sense of danger. Its pacing gives suspense room to build, while the coastal setting, direction, editing, and sound work together rather than competing for attention. The result is a film whose central conflict feels both immediate and coherent.

At 124 minutes, according to the American Film Institute’s film record, it has space to establish the people and place before the danger takes over. Amblin’s account of the production describes a 159-day shoot that began May 2, 1974, on Martha’s Vineyard and at sea, extended by weather and technical problems. That difficult production history is context; the finished film’s controlled tension is the reason it leads this list.

Universal Pictures’ April 29, 2025 press release says Jaws “made history in 1975,” establishing the summer-blockbuster spectacle. The film opened June 20, 1975. The Associated Press reported in 2025 that it earned $7.9 million in its first days, then a record, and $260.7 million domestically on its initial run. Those are historical figures, not a current cumulative gross. The AP also attributed to Steven Spielberg an estimate of $175 million in box-office impact from mechanical-shark delays; that is his reported estimate, not an independently measured causal total.

Best for

Choose the original for the most complete combination of suspense, atmosphere, character, and narrative payoff in the series.

2. Jaws 2 (1978)

Why it ranks second

Jaws 2 is the most direct continuation: it returns to the same coastal community and renews the shark threat. It has the clearest claim among the sequels to conventional suspense, but it does not match the original’s precision or the strength of its overall dramatic design. Its appeal is that of a recognizable follow-up, not a reinvention.

The American Film Institute’s production record documents serious trouble behind the scenes. Those difficulties are part of the film’s history, but they do not decide its place here; the ranking is based on what appears onscreen. As a rewatch, it works best for viewers who want another straightforward Jaws thriller rather than a radical change in tone.

Best for

Pick Jaws 2 when you want the closest thing to a traditional continuation of the original’s premise.

3. Jaws 3-D (1983)

Why it ranks third

The third film changes the attraction: its theatrical title foregrounds 3-D, and its format is part of the experience rather than a minor technical detail. That gives it a distinct novelty value, but the spectacle does not provide the same sustained suspense or story coherence as the top two films. Its best case is as an unmistakably 1980s franchise detour.

Universal’s collection uses the shorter label Jaws 3; when referring to the theatrical title and format, Jaws 3-D is clearer. This is a ranking judgment, not a statement about how critics or audiences have collectively rated it.

Best for

Choose it if the appeal is period 3-D spectacle, franchise novelty, or seeing the series take a conspicuously different route.

4. Jaws: The Revenge (1987)

Why it ranks fourth

The fourth film is the series’ most eccentric chapter. Its premise and resolution feel less coherent than those of the earlier entries, and it offers less of their carefully sustained tension. That makes it the least successful film on the criteria used here, even as its unusual choices can make it an entertaining curiosity.

The American Film Institute identifies Jaws: The Revenge as the fourth installment and lists its runtime as 90 minutes in its 1987 record. Its compact length makes it a brief final stop in a series that began with a much more controlled exercise in suspense.

Best for

Save it for a completionist franchise watch or a night when eccentric sequel storytelling is part of the appeal.

At a glance

Rank Film Year Why watch it
1 Jaws 1975 The strongest balance of suspense, craft, character, and story.
2 Jaws 2 1978 The most straightforward continuation.
3 Jaws 3-D (also listed as Jaws 3) 1983 Best approached for 3-D novelty and sequel spectacle.
4 Jaws: The Revenge 1987 The most eccentric final chapter.

What order should you watch the Jaws movies in?

For a first franchise watch, follow release order: Jaws, Jaws 2, Jaws 3-D, then Jaws: The Revenge. It lets you experience the shift from the original’s suspense-led storytelling through increasingly different sequel approaches. If you only want the strongest single film, start and stop with Jaws; if you are curious about how the series changes, continue through all four.
