The Grayscale Glory Days of 1960s Television: How Color Arrived Gradually

Color TV expanded across U.S. networks during the 1960s, but monochrome remained familiar in programs, homes and the archival recordings that survive.

U.S. television in the 1960s was not simply black-and-white, nor did it turn to color all at once. Color broadcasting expanded through the decade, but monochrome remained familiar in everyday programming and in homes without color receivers. The transition makes most sense when broadcast availability, a show’s production format, household equipment and the recordings that survive are treated as separate parts of the story.

How did U.S. television turn to color?

The shift began long before color became a routine part of viewing. The National Museum of American History catalogs a 1947 Federal Communications Commission field-test record comparing black-and-white and color television systems. It marks an early technical and regulatory chapter, not a finding about which system won or when viewers broadly adopted color. The museum catalog entry documents the test record.

By the 1960s, the change was also a commercial and aesthetic project. NBC was particularly invested in color programming; its parent company, RCA, had developed the system that became the NTSC standard and had a business interest in selling color sets. That incentive helps explain NBC’s enthusiasm, but it was not the sole cause of television’s transition.

Conversion unfolded over years rather than through a single nationwide switch. A Smithsonian account says all three U.S. networks had not completed their conversion until the late 1960s. That milestone describes network programming, not the moment every program was color or every viewer had a color set. The Smithsonian’s account of television in color provides the network context.

Why did black-and-white remain familiar?

Color’s presence in broadcasting did not mean color was yet the ordinary experience for every viewer. A program might be made or transmitted in color while a household watched on a monochrome receiver. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, color was selective, while black-and-white remained a familiar visual language for genres including soap operas, talk shows, game shows and children’s programming. This is a description of the period’s uneven change, not a quantitative count of schedules.

The available sources do not establish an annual U.S. series showing how many households owned color sets during the decade. One Smithsonian American Art Museum page estimates 70 million television sets by 1959, but that is a broad estimate of sets—not color receivers, households with a television, or a measure of 1960s color adoption. The museum’s discussion of television and art gives that qualified figure.

When did color television take off—and when did it replace black-and-white?

For U.S. network television, color gained ground during the 1960s, with the three networks’ conversion reaching completion only in the decade’s later years. “Take off” therefore depends on what is being measured: the availability of color programs, a network’s conversion, or the experience inside a particular home. Those milestones did not happen simultaneously.

There is no exact disappearance date established here for black-and-white sets in U.S. households. Network conversion should not be mistaken for universal receiver ownership, and the evidence does not support a precise year when monochrome viewing ended in homes.

  • X-Frame Look: A bold X-shaped motif runs along both ends and the cabinet fronts, giving this rustic unit a recognizable farmhouse identity that blends with existing decor.

How did the transition differ outside the United States?

The U.S. network timeline is not a worldwide timetable. The Science Museum Group dates the start of regular BBC color service to July 1967, a separate milestone for Britain. It should not be used as the date U.S. networks converted or as evidence that countries changed at the same pace. The Science Museum Group’s history of color television describes the BBC service milestone.

Why do old television clips sometimes look monochrome?

A black-and-white clip seen today does not by itself prove the original program was broadcast that way. One common recording method, the kinescope, filmed a synchronized television monitor. The recording method and later preservation history shape the image that survives, so a monochrome archival copy may reflect how a program was recorded or preserved rather than its original broadcast format. The Library of Congress explains the kinescope recording process and its place in television history.

That archival distinction matters when watching documentaries or clips today: a surviving copy is evidence of a particular recording and preservation path, not always a transparent window onto the original transmission. The period’s grayscale appearance is real in many programs and records, but it cannot be generalized to every show or broadcast of the decade.

What “grayscale glory days” captures

The phrase works as a retrospective mood, not a literal description of an entirely monochrome decade. The 1960s were an overlap: color was technically established and increasingly promoted, while black-and-white programming and viewing remained ordinary parts of television life. In a German Historical Institute Washington essay, FCC chairman Newton Minow’s phrase “vast wasteland” appears as a compact reminder that television’s cultural reputation was also being debated amid these technical changes. The German Historical Institute Washington essay provides that reference.
